Dr. Stoianovici is Associate Professor of Urology and Director of the URobotics Program at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department where he teaches Computer Aided Design.

His specialty is surgical robotics in particular robotic hardware. His research is focused on the design, manufacturing, and control of robots for direct image-guided intervention (DIGI). His research is experimentally oriented including extensive hands-on expertise in computer-controlled manufacturing and software development for image-guided navigation. In his career he developed numerous robotic systems and medical devices (projects). His bibliography includes numerous articles, presentations, and patens of invention. These inventions include a novel backlash-free rotary transmission (Ball Worm), the first Pneumatic Stepper Motor (PneuStep), and the first fully actuated MRI-Stealth robot (MrBot).

Dr. Stoianovici is a Section Editor for the Journal of Endourology, Executive Director of the Engineering & Urology Society, Associate Editor for the International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer Aided Surgery, Consulting Editor for the Journal of Robotic Surgery, and a member of the Editorial Board for the Minimally Invasive Therapy & Allied Technologies. He is a consultant for Reuters and for the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and serves on National Institute of Health study sections, and panels of the American Urological Association and the United States Army Medical Research and Materiel Command.
