Talk:Stonefish

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The last line reads that the sting of the scorpion fish is almost as bad BUT the stone fish is a type of scorpion fish. This should be changed —Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.67.246.249 (talk) 16:22, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Daylight

At a fish aquarium in london England, flash photography is not allowed, is this because stonefish would be blind or perhaps a totally differnt reason? -- Allix- Wednesday, 16 august 2006 23:00 GMT

I have always wondered about the evolution of the stonefish's defence mechanism. What does it defend itself against, apart from unsuspecting humans? In an almost weightless environment, what could settle so heavily on a disguised rock that it results in the evolution of venom so toxic? Mark, 20 November 2006.

Stonefish are feed upon by rays and sharks. Their defense is in response to these animals. Arzel 02:31, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

You should also remember that although humans can't see it, many sharks and rays which are sensitive to electrical fields can sense it, and it is to these the venom acts as a second measure of defense.Kare Kare 14:28, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Merge?

No, one article is about the genera in the family, & the other is only about one of the species (hopefully there will be others). GrahamBould 07:01, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Strong Oppose As per above. The stonefishes are a family with more than one genera and species. The only time a family and species article should link to the same page is when the family only has a single species within it (eg Dinolestidae). Kare Kare 14:22, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

By the way Graham... why did you propose a merge and subsequently oppose it yourself? Are you feeling Ok? Kare Kare 14:31, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Strong oppose for the same reason - there are many stonefishes but only one stonefish... Photo2222 22:20, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Advice contradicts several sources e.g. http://www.barrierreefaustralia.com/the-great-barrier-reef/stonefish.htm Suggest medical expert reviews latest treatment protocols -especially due to potential fatalities of this Family. 58.175.49.14 (talk) 23:10, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
