Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stonehouse is a small town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is located on Avon Water in an area of natural beauty and historical interest and near to the Clyde Valley. It is situated on the A71 a few miles south of its junction with the M74.
In 1971 Stonehouse was designated one of Scotland's New Towns. It was designed to accommodate Glasgow overspill; however a determined attempt to regenerate areas within the city of Glasgow by renewing older properties precipitated a change in policy. East Kilbride, Cumbernauld and Livingston, in particular, have proved to be very successful new towns and undoubtedly offered a transformation in the living conditions of many local residents. In light of these considerations, Stonehouse was never built. Indecision as to whether to build or not lasted several years; finally in 1976 it was decided that Stonehouse would not be built as a New Town.
