Stone Cold (1993) is a young adult novel by Robert Swindells. It was the winner of the Carnegie Medal for 1993.[1]
Stone Cold is a novel about homelessness. The main character is called Link, who leaves home to get away from a bullying stepfather, and finds himself on the streets of London. A twisted and bitter ex-sergeant and registered sex offender who calls himself 'Shelter' stalks the streets, blaming the homeless for his discharge, and blames the homeless for 'dragging the country down'.
Meanwhile Link is befriended by Ginger, a street-wise dosser, and learns how to survive on the cold, hard, deadly game that is London. Link makes a new friend, Gail, He stops worrying about everything else, but other kids are still vanishing. Shelter is responsible, and Link must avoid becoming his next victim.
In 1997, the novel was adapted for a film of the same title, starring James Gaddas and Elizabeth Rider.
