[edit] Name and history
Statewide, the only other Stokes Township is located in Madison County.
Stokes Township was formed in 1838 from Bloomfield Township.[citation needed]
The township was also involved in one of the last county border changes in Ohio. This change occurred in 1888 when part of Stokes Township was exchanged with Clay Township in Auglaize County for part of that county's Goshen Township.[4]
[edit] Government
The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township fiscal officer, who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the fiscal officership or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees.
In the elections of November 2007, Dustin Wickerham defeated two other candidates in the election for the position of township trustee,[5] while Joan Shouse was elected without opposition to the position of township fiscal officer.[6]
[edit] Transportation
U.S. Route 33 is the most important highway in Stokes Township. Other significant highways include State Routes 235, 365, 366, 368, and 720.
