[edit] History

The station first opened on 1 September 1892, and was served by both the London Underground Metropolitan Line and the Great Central Railway.

However, when the London Underground was fully electrified in the 1960s, a decision was made to run only as far as Amersham; three stops short of Stoke Mandeville. This meant Stoke Mandeville is now served by overground only. Services were run by Network SouthEast until privatisation in 1996, when Chiltern Railways took over the franchise.

The lawn at the station front features several sculptures including a statue of a former employee.

[edit] Services

At peak times, there are up to 4 trains per hour towards London in the morning, and returning from London (towards Aylesbury) in the evening. Some of these are express services, which skip the stops shared with the Metropolitan Line nearer to London.

Journeys to Marylebone take approximately 55 minutes (45 minutes for express trains). Journeys to Aylesbury take approximately 5 minutes.

The normal service pattern is as follows:

  • 2 tph to Aylesbury
  • 2 tph to London Marylebone

[edit] Onward connections

For Stoke Mandeville Hospital, rail passengers should alight at Aylesbury and take the Red Route 9 bus from Aylesbury Bus Station.

Buses operate from the station to Aylesbury and Leighton Buzzard, run by Arriva Shires & Essex.
