Stockton Sixth Form College

Stockton Sixth Form College [1] is located on Bishopton Road West in Stockton-On-Tees, North East England.

The College first opened in the 1920's on the grounds of the old St Georges comprehensive school for boys and was opened by Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser[1]. The first college closed after a fire in august 1954 but was re-built in the mid 70's due to demand for another center for higher education in the Stockton area[2]. to this day the college remains popular with local students and offers a wide variety of courses and enrichment activities.

The college provides a range of A-level, GCSE and vocational courses to post-16 students in the Stockton-on-Tees area. All classrooms are equipped with a data projector, multi-media PC, VCR and speakers enabling teachers to make use of the latest technology in their teaching. In addition, there are computers available for private study in open access rooms, study areas and the common room. The college also has an online learning environment in the form of the college intranet but students may also utilise the facilities of the VLE or (virtual learning environment) through which students can access learning materials and also send private messages to one another.

Stockton Sixth Form College prides itself in the quality of teaching and the friendliness of the staff.

Upon entering the college via the student main entrance approximately 2 metres away to the left and within walking distance of the much acclaimed student support centre you will find the common room/social area. A wing of the college intended to help alleviate students from the stress and tensions of A level and other F.E study. The college prides itself in its care and concern for the pupils and allows the airing of many popular secular and non secular forms of choral verse and pop music during students restive periods. The third floors is dedicated to the fields of Sociology, Psychology,and child care, with IT Facilities provided for students in most class rooms.

The College has a history of successful trips to Europe certain courses giving students the chance to visit Prague, Aix-en-Provence , Troisdorf and Oldham home of Manchester rock band the Inspiral Carpets.[3]

Enrichment schemes take place at the college once a week usually in a lunchtime in order to broaden student's horizons; groups such as the college newspaper, the young enterprise and the Clint Eastwood appreciation society are popular choices for many students. There are also other enrichment activities such as a beginners guide to jazz.

The College now runs a Cricket course in which students can undertake cricket coaching under the guidance of tutor David Speight for 4-8 hours a day.

The New college dance studio finished construction in late 2007 the architecture of which was inspired by the 1973 album 'raw power' by punk legends 'Iggy and the stooges'

The College has plans to move its campus to a new site on Eastborne road Whitton and will transfer premises once construction has begun on the new campus in 2012
