The Peel Centre (Stockport) is a shopping complex located in Stockport, Greater Manchester, adjacent to the town centre. It is a retail park with a range of ‘warehouse style’ shops, such as Borders, PC World and Next. It was developed in the 1980s on the site of a former power station, and one of the cooling towers remained until the early 1990s.

The centre has grown steadily since it was established, including the construction of a new phase of shops including Currys and PC World, which is collectively known as Phase IV of The Peel Centre. The centre is named, ‘The Peel Centre’ as it is owned by Manchester-based property and infrastructure company, Peel Group. There are other Peel Centres (retail parks) in places such as Preston, Lancashire and Barnsley, South Yorkshire. It actively competes with the other major shopping area in Stockport town centre, the Merseyway Shopping Centre. Within the last 8 years, development has included the closure of a Homebase DIY Store, and the redevelopment of an area to make way for Argos Extra, Borders and Boots. Immediately next to the western edge of the centre lies one of the towns main supermarkets, ASDA.

[edit] Transport Links

The M60 motorway is adjacent to the centre, and junction 27 (Portwood Roundabout) is located at the eastern corner of the centre, this makes it accessible to a large catchment population in the Greater Manchester Urban Area, and as it is larger than many competing retail parks (e.g. Snipe Retail Park, Ashton-under-Lyne) it succeeds in attracting large numbers of shoppers every year.

[edit] Extra Information

There is extensive car parking at the centre, it is mainly pay and display, and is managed by Excel Parking Ltd.

There is an empty retail unit across the road from the centre, which is due to be developed sometime within the next few years, with Sainsbury's having been selected as the preferred developer by Stockport Council in January 2008[1]. This unit housed Staples Inc. before they moved to the other side of the town centre. Across the road form the Eastern fringe of the centre lies Portwood Court, an additional retail development containing 3 mid-sized units. As mentioned above the centre is close to the towns major supermarkets, ASDA and Tesco Extra.
