Rose's name does not appear on the Gambit dust jacket, but it is regarded as his work by John Cooper and B.A. Pike in their 1995 book, Artists in Crime: An Illustrated Survey of Crime Fiction First Edition Dust Wrappers 1920–1970 (ISBN 1859281885). From page 170 —
"artist: ? John Rose ... The white wrapper, in Rose's characteristic style, has red chessmen and a blue poison bottle."
