Stjørdalen

Stjørdalen is a traditional district in the Trøndelag region of Norway, consisting of the municipalities of Stjørdal and Meråker.
It was formerly a separate municipality, created in 1837 but split to create Øvre Stjørdalen and Nedre Stjørdalen in 1850. At that time Stjørdalen had a population of 11,642.
1 January, 1874, Øvre Stjørdalen was split into the two municipalities of almost equal size: Hegra and Meråker. 1 January, 1901, Nedre Stjørdalen was split into three municipalities of merely equal sizes: Skatval, Stjørdal and Lånke. 1 January, 1962, Hegra, Skatval, Stjørdal and Lånke. was merged to form the new Stjørdal municipality. 1 June, 1997, Stjørdal gained status as a city.
Currently, the combined population of the municipalities Stjørdal and Meråker is 21,738.
