[edit] Function of the stipule
What is the function of the stipule?
- I've added an external link to a good article on stipules from the UCLA site which has some details on the stipule's function. The stipule may only be rudimentary in some plants, but in others it will serve one or more purposes, most likely in supporting the young leaf in terms of structural support and direction of growth, protection from herbivores, and protection from environment (e.g. wind, cold). [edit] Widely-used definition
I object to the move to Wiktionary. The term 'stipule' is constantly used when describing a plant species, cfr. the number of hyperlinks. Moving this article to Wiktionary would require us to explain each time what a stipule is. JoJan 20:55, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
- Certainly a good point, although insufficient in my mind to justify a permament stub and "just definition" page. However, I would not simply "delete" stipule without solving the problem that you raise, which I agree is an important one (although the list of what links here is pretty short) - Marshman 21:04, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
- Now I agree with you, however, for the reason that I think the article can be expanded considerably—stipules seem to me to be rather odd and in many species highly modified structures about which a lot more could be said; and better here than worked into the (now a bit too long) article leaf where the information might otherwise logically be put - Marshman
