[edit] re Proposed Merging

Merge with Venom (poison) which a decent enough article. It is less intuitive that it should be merged with the other suggestion made of Stinger (organ), and which is itself only a stub. David Ruben 00:42, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

Oppose. These are different subjects. Like "Blood" and "Vein". Size is not a valid criterion. Subject is. mikka (t) 16:57, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

  • Good point... Hmmm - on reflection I change my mind - I think the current contents need mostly to merge with Stinger (organ), yet the title of 'Sting (biology)' should remain but be rewritten from the point of the process, rather than any noun:
    • Venom (poison) & Stinger (organ) are indeed different, I did not mean imply in my comment above that my decission based on size - no harm for any topic start as a stub.
    • Firstly I suspect in general use, the word 'sting' is used primarily as the verb rather than the noun, and as such, what the victim experiences is the effects of having 'been stung' with a poison/venom rather than the process of something penetrating through the skin. The process of animals delivering a sting is best suited within the existing article on stinger organs and the effect in that on venoms.
    • Secondly 'stinging' also applies to the sensation/effects delivered by stinger glands, and not just organs. Examples are jellyfish, which as an animals deliver a venom, and stinging nettles which being a plant delivers a poison. So the topic of 'sting' needs encompass both the results of both organs and glands.
    • 'Sting (biology)' perhaps should be a disambiguation page to direct the reader to Stinger (organ) of animals that deliver venom , and glands of plants/jellyfish delivering poisons.
    • PS the gland article is itself currently a stub... David Ruben 19:31, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

Comment – A more appropriate merge may be venom (poison) with toxin, if any such merge is to be made at all. – ClockworkSoul 18:03, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

So...should the template be removed, then? Twilight Realm 02:34, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

  • Seems that way. I'll remove it now. – ClockworkSoul 04:59, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
