[edit] Ottawa municipal election, 2006
Incumbent councillor Janet Stavinga decided against running for re-election, in the newly formed ward which lost most of its rural areas. The race to fill the seat is between Gilles R. Chasles and Shad Qadri. Chasles is a Conservative and a businessman, owning Danicks Data Systems. Mr. Chasles moved to Stittsville with his wife Danielle and his two children leigh-Anne and Steven in 1989. Soon after making Stittsville his home, Mr. Chasles founded Danicks Data Systems Inc. and located his business in the heart of Stittsville, purchased another local company "Capital Cartridge" in 2005. Gilles has been a very active member of his community. He was instrumental in the implementation of the Hockey initiation program for kids age 5 to 8 years old. teaching them about the pleasure of skating and playing hockey. He then went on to coaching hockey for 6 years until his son decided that "snowboarding" was more fun than hockey ! Gilles also coached soccer in it's early days and had a great time doing it and meeting new people and making ew friends for life at the same time. In 1989, he joined United Way/Centraide of Ottawa Carleton as an Account Executive (volunteer) and worked his way to the top to become General Campaign Chair in 1997. He oversaw 14,000+ volunteers and reached a record $13.8 Million dollars for the many agencies and programs in Ottawa. The following year, Gilles became the Campaign Chair for the Ottawa Red Cross' Campaign for Humanity. He personally delivered everyday necessities to homeless shelters in Ottawa, delivering socks, underwear, tooth paste and other items that most of us take for granted. More recently, in 2005, Mr. Chasles founded "NoDump.ca" an activist group fighting the proposed expansion of the Carp road landfill. As of today (May 2008) the results of their efforts is showing, with the owners of the landfill slowly changing their plans to expand and focussing more on new technologies to eleminate residential waste. A new plant WTE, waste to energy will be built and will extract gases from the mount of waste, burn them and generate electricity, enough to supply over 6,000 homes. In his words, "it's better than 2 more mountains of garbage". Gilles also served as a board menber and executive in charge of fund raising for our Minister of defence Mr. Gordon O'Connor, worked on the election campaign of Lisa MacLeod MPP for Nepean-Ottawa West. Running for a seat on council was another way to serve his community. Having someone on council like Mr. Chasles would have been a blessing for our community. Someone that actually lives in the ward and really cares for it's residents. The main focus of his campaign was to stop the expansion of the carp road dump, increase security and policing visibility on our streets, to stop the proposed light rail fiasco that council had signed just weeks prior to the municipal election of 2006, and to reduce taxes and free for all spending at city hall. A true fiscal conservative. Mr. Chasles now spends his free time fly fishing and quality time at his cottage with his family and friends. His newest adventure his a Fly fishing, kayaking store to open in Bells Corner in July of 2008. With over 2,200 sq.ft. of floor space, this will become the most prestigious and friendly fly shop in the area. Serving beginners to professionals.
