Still Mind Zendo is a Soto Zen practice center located in New York City, founded by Janet Jiryu Abels Sensei and Father Robert Kennedy in 1994 and established in the White Plum Asanga lineage of Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi. Formerly located at 120 Washington Place, the center was previously located in a brownstone dwelling owned by Abels.[1] While the center does practice in a Buddhist lineage, the community is ecumenical in nature—not requiring belief in Buddhist tenets. According to Jeff Wilson, "...you'd hardly know that many members of Still Mind Zendo don't consider themselves Buddhists. The practice is the same as at other White Plum Soto centers—chanting of the Heart Sutra, lots of silent sitting, walking meditation, private interviews with the teacher, koan study, and so on. Sometimes Biblical parables are used to highlight Zen philosophical ideas, but you can find that sort of eclecticism in much more conservative sanghas as well."[2]
