Stijn Schaars (born January 11, 1984 in Gendt) is a Dutch footballer, currently playing for AZ of the Eredivisie. Schaars is a versatile player who can play either as a defensive midfielder or as a left-sided midfielder and has grown into being one of the most important players for AZ. He is known for his tough tackling and good passing.
He began his career at Vitesse Arnhem and he made his debut at the club on March 9, 2003 in a 4-1 away defeat to FC Utrecht. In 2005 he transferred to AZ.
His debut for the national team came on August 16, 2006, as he started in a 4-0 win over Republic of Ireland. Earlier that year he was the captain of the Dutch squad that won the UEFA U-21 Championship 2006.
