[edit] Grade comparison table

I notice that you uploaded the grade comparison table image used on Grade (climbing), I have made a suggestion on Talk:Grade (climbing) to replace the image with a markup based table that could be edited if needed, what are your thoughts? -- pcrtalk 20:30, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi Pcr. I've replied on the article's talk page. Stewart Adcock 21:09, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] 138.40.1.12

138.40.1.12 (talk · contribs) is still adding the same link to multiple articles one hour after you warned him. --Viriditas | Talk 29 June 2005 11:19 (UTC)

Thanks, I am trying to initiate conversation with him/her. I, now, don't think this is an intentional vandal. Stewart Adcock 29 June 2005 11:24 (UTC)
Ok, I see that now. They are actually different links from the same domain. --Viriditas | Talk 29 June 2005 11:26 (UTC)

[edit] Category:UK Wikipedians

Hi, just to let you know that the list of UK participants at the UK notice board was getting rather long, so I have replaced it with the above category which I have added to your user page. -- Francs2000 | Talk 30 June 2005 20:59 (UTC)

[edit] Soulflower

Since you seem to be online, i'll ask this. Are texts in cdbaby.com under copyright? I did not find any statements. Feydey 5 July 2005 08:17 (UTC)

In the absense of any copyright/licensing statements, I would assume that the text is copyrighted (since there is no need for an author to explicitly state their copyright claims - they have copyright by default in most of the world). To be sure, you could always email "cdbaby@cdbaby.com" and ask. Stewart Adcock 5 July 2005 08:24 (UTC)
Just to let you know, I've warned the anon user about copyrights and licensing and deleted the Soulflower article. Stewart Adcock 5 July 2005 08:39 (UTC)
Thanks, it's strange that the owner of that page doesn't bother to put a small line even in the main page on the status of the material. Seems to be a fairly big page. Heh what can you do.... Feydey 5 July 2005 08:45 (UTC)

[edit] Alexander Cruden

I don't know what the history is, but would it not be better to make Alexander cruden a redirect to Alexander Cruden and then protect it? -- RHaworth 2005 July 5 15:49 (UTC)

Yes, you are absolutely right, so I've done that. The deleted article was about(read:insulting) a very different "Alexander Cruden". Thanks Stewart Adcock 5 July 2005 15:59 (UTC)

[edit] You put Template:Deletedpage on Pier Dominguez?!

Geez, finally! Thank you so much!

I'd never heard of that template, and until now I didn't think such a thing was possible on the Wikipedia (it stops vanity spammers dead in their tracks, but it's really anti-wiki; I'm surprised that our resident antideletionists have permitted the template to exist.) --Ardonik.talk()* 07:57, July 10, 2005 (UTC)

Indeed. {{deletedpage}} is probably really only intended for blocking of trolls/vandals/spammers in the most severe cases. I decided that the author of this article was persistent enough it warrant it though! Stewart Adcock 09:43, 10 July 2005 (UTC) (PS. Upon any further questioning, should I say that I cooked the cat before eating it or that I ate it raw? ;-) )
Of course you must cook the creature in order to enjoy a fine and juicy meal. Eating your cat does not suddenly make you uncivilized, after all. --Ardonik.talk()* 08:05, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Images

My understanding is they shouldn't have been or be downloaded until permission has been granted. Permission is apparently being sought. In the mean time they are not free under GFU and therefore should be deleted until such time as permission is given, when they can be redownloaded under GFU copyright. GFU copyright pending does not make for a legitimate download, from what I understand of the subject, and I have flagged them for being downloaded prematurely, basing myself on the statements of the person who downloaded them. Thanks, SqueakBox 19:16, July 11, 2005 (UTC)

Okay. They are deleted... Stewart Adcock 19:19, 11 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Trollstar.jpg

Please do not speedy delete images like this; it was in use on several user pages. Please take it through the appropriate channel (WP:IFD). --SPUI (talk) 04:48, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

By my reckoning, the obscene Trollstar image was in use on three user pages. (1) Your's, were it seems to be used in bad faith. (2) The vandalised user page for one user who appears to have left wikipedia. (3) It is not clear why it exists on the third user page, but just seems to be indicating the image's reference to goatse.cx.
Additionally, at 04:51, 13 July 2005, you wrote, "Fucking idiots speedy deleting images". Personally, I don't think I am a "Fucking idiot" and therefore the obscene image stays deleted if I have anything to do with it. Regards, Stewart Adcock 07:41, 13 July 2005 (UTC)
As user (3), I'd like to state for the record that the trollstar was on my page because it is one the the three best images ever. This should have been obvious, as the section was clearly labelled "Best images ever". Thanks to this unilateral action by yourself, the other two images have been severely (possibly permanently) emotionally damaged. The "All Your Edit War" clip is beginning to beleive the claims that it is just another iteration of a tired and unfunny meme that should have died years ago, while the Climp is frequently seen moping around the "Best redirects ever" section. -- Scott e 01:32, July 23, 2005 (UTC)
There's nothing stopping you from uploading another copy of that image if it is something that you really care about. Stewart Adcock 19:37, 26 July 2005 (UTC)
Yes there is, since I don't have a locally saved copy. But then again, I don't really care :) -- Scott e 04:04, July 27, 2005 (UTC)

All three uses seem to have been sanctioned by the users. I know Sam Hocevar to be one who would be amused with the image. Either way, there is absolutely no reason to speedy delete an image like this, especially since image deletions are irreversible. --SPUI (talk) 07:50, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

I think you've had this conversation before, with other wikipedians. My take on it is that it is obscene (and besides, it is an editted version of the infamous goatse.cx pic which isn't favourably licensed. Fair use/parody isn't necessarily acceptable outside the US). I can do nothing to stop you from grabbing it out of your browser's cache and uploading it again -- however, I am sure that it will get deleted again so the whole exercise will just be wasting everyone's time and effort that could be devoted to making wikipedia a better encyclopedia. Stewart Adcock 08:04, 13 July 2005 (UTC)
I was under the impression that US fair use was allowable under Wikipedia; if not, why are there fair use tags? I don't believe that where it had been used were cases of trolling, and it wasn't used in the main article namespace, AFAIK. In terms of obscenity, well, it was just a pair of hands. Yes, hands of goatse, but there are far more explicit images up on wiki* (e.g. STD pictures on commons). It's not as if the image took up much space, either. --Dave2 03:14, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
Obscene/offensive are not the same as explicit, although context is often the critical factor. As far as fair use is concerned, I may be wrong, but it appears to me that fair use pictures are tolerated in the absence of suitable free (as in libre) pictures. Obviously, in the cases where it had been used in trolling, those uses had been deleted long ago, as they should. This is meant to be an encyclopedia, not a playground. Stewart Adcock 21:43, 19 July 2005 (UTC)
Managed to miss this edit in my watchlist... Again, I've not seen it used in a trolling context on Wikipedia. In terms of obscenity, I fail to see how it is any more obscene than, say, Commons:Image:Masturbation.jpg. From what I remember, it was simply a pair of hands (albeit those of goatse); certainly not obscene by my standards. As for Wikipedia being an encyclopedia rather than a playground, I agree, but A) I don't feel that that is a good reason to speedy delete an image, and B) there are many other "fun" images which I don't see being deleted, such as, for example, Image:Wp_ayb.gif, and neither do I feel that they should be. As long as they're kept out of the main article namespace, and don't take up too many resources on the server, I personally don't have a problem with them (but this is just my opinion, and so doesn't particularly mean much in terms of discussion). --Dave2 14:43, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
There's nothing stopping you from uploading another copy of that image if it is something that you really care about. Stewart Adcock 19:37, 26 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Empty user page

A belated thank you. My reasons for wanting to have none may have been outdated by the current implementation (I can hide my own edits on the watchlist, which is almost as good as having them marked by redlinks). Nevertheless, I requested none, and -while that request stays - am glad to have it honored. Septentrionalis 17:49, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

The Barnstar of Diligence, awarded by Essjay for correcting over fifty userpages affected by a glitch in Template:Welcome4. Amazing work!

Thanks for catching that glitch in my welcome template. Another user asked if we could put a note in the template about using the tildes, and I did, but I didn't realize that it caused problems until after I'd welcomed dozens of users. (I've fixed it now, I think.) I'll go back over my contribution list and fix the rest. Good work! -- Essjay · Talk 17:46, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

Cool. I was going to leave a message to warn you, but I noticed that you'd already fixed the source of the problem yourself. I'll leave you to fix the remainder, but I've made a good start for you!
(BTW/ good luck with your Adminship vote.)
Stewart Adcock 17:49, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

A good start? A good start? You made a Herculean effort! There had to be at least seventy five pages to fix, and you fixed two thirds of them! For that, you get a barnstar and my eternal thanks! [edit] Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/List_of_biomedical_terms

Hi, I noticed that you closed this VfD but, while your deletion was in order, it's such a patently useful set of articles that I've undeleted them all. I don't fault your action, but I'm taking the weight of undeletion onto my own shoulders because I believe this is too valuable a resource for Wikipedia to delete. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 23:51, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] The weather in London

The weather in London (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs) Recreated many, many times, always nonsense, or worse. Protected as redirect to London. Stewart Adcock 10:48, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

It might have been worth discussing this first. It is deliberately kept as a broken link so people can see what one looks like (your deletion of "foggy was fine), and what can be done with deleted pages. An example is at Wikipedia:Viewing and restoring deleted pages by sysops, which you have just broken. Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/The weather in London decision was delete not redirect. --Henrygb 18:42, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] thanks for supporting me

Hello, just a quick note to express my gratitude for your support of my RfA. I'm sure I'll become a familiar face on places like the Administrator's Noticeboard and Requests for Adminship, as well as the murkier parts of my new job. "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked." (Luke 12:48, NIV) Never was a truer word spoken. I feel empowered, yes, but not in the "oooh cool delete button!" way I was kind of expecting. Already I feel the weight of the responsibility I have now been entrusted with, a weight that will no doubt reduce given time. Thank you for believing in me. :) GarrettTalk 10:33, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Congratulations Garrett! I probably did have more of the "oooh cool delete button!" response, initially ;-) Stewart Adcock 10:38, 22 July 2005 (UTC)
LOL! Well I just became admin of a Wikicity this morning, so that kind of "spoiled" the surprise and newness of everything as I'd already had a few hours to play around with everything. But now comes the serious part, Speedy Deletions ahoy! :) GarrettTalk 11:10, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

This image was in use on several pages. Please remember to check all pages before deleting an article or image. Your comment was that it was on the Commons, but the Commons image did not appear. --AllyUnion (talk) 05:16, 20 August 2005 (UTC)

I'm sure that this is a database problem - I always do check for links in the main namespace before deleting images. I don't recall exactly what was shown more than a month ago when I deleted that image, but most (maybe all, I didn't check) of the current links are actually erroneous. [edit] String inverter

String inverter is the last August 2004 cleanup entry. Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce/String inverter. It's been on User:flehmen/Desk and User:bananagirl/Desk since 9/19. But neither of those people is on the active participant list. Frankly that article looks hard which is why I haven't worked on it myself. Is there anyone on the task force who listed preference as something like I enjoy a challenge? (The original author was contacted by someone during AFD for the string inverter and has promised to clean it up within the next 4 weeks... ). RJFJR 21:06, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

You are right about the challenge! I get spasms when trying to read this article. Personally, I'd let AfD run its course before the cleanup taskforce worries about it any further. There will be lots of eyes looking at it at the moment and the usual wiki processes will either improve it or not be harmed by its disappearance! Stewart Adcock 14:50, 2 October 2005 (UTC)
Works for me. Thanks! (And also thanks for the comment about RFAd.) RJFJR 15:08, 2 October 2005 (UTC)
What was the reason for the deletion behind the string inverter article? Looked fine to me, although somewhat on the technical side, from a cursory glance. --HappyCamper 02:39, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

You have expressed an interest in Wikimedia UK. Just to let you know I've posted a draft Memorandum of Association and Articles of Association of the proposed "Wikimedia UK" charitable company on Wikimedia UK/Memorandum of Association and Wikimedia UK/Articles of Association. It is proposed that these will receive initial approval by interested parties at a meeting on 27 November. I will put together a brief agenda for the more formal aspects of that meeting soon. Memo and Arts of Association are a company's constitution, and need to be agreed before the company is formed (though they can be changed at a later date). Please feel free to comment on the relevant talk pages (I'd rather the proposed drafts are left unedited so that it is easy to see what is going on) - particularly if there is something there that you would disagree with at the meeting, details of which can be found on the Wikimedia UK page on Wikimedia Meta-Wiki. [edit] Deep-water soloing

Hey, I was just looking at tidying up some of the pages regarding Solo climbing, as I felt that there was some confusion surrounding the difference between solo climbing (with a belay rig) and free soloing (without any belay - just you and the rock).

I found your entry Deep-water soloing, and I was wondering - should it be included with the free soloing lot (in that you don't use ropes, just the crash mat known as "the ocean") or what...

I'd love to hear your thoughts.
