[edit] The Amount of vandalism this Page suffers

The Amount of vandalism this Page suffers from English people shows how shit McClaren must be as a manager. That people from his own country would write disgusting criticism on his page proves, as well as his record in competition - that he is not very good at managing football teams.

Thoughts? 83.170.64.84 21:14, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Yeah. He's also managing England which makes him a legitimate target for all forms of abuse and intrusion into the private lives of himself and everyone around him. I think The News of The World is has plans to do a weekly pull out featuring previously unseen information about a different one of the items of furniture in his living room. [edit] Steve as a youth

I was in the year above Steve at Nunthorpe. I've edited the part about him representing Yorkshire as a schoolboy - he couldn't have, as the county didn't exist as a political or sporting unit for football teams anymore after 1973. He would have represented North Yorkshire, as did Brian Kelly of Nunthorpe School in our year. (A team, by the way, that also included future Leeds United player Aiden Butterworth from Tadcaster Grammar School.)

And if he really did travel as many as 5 miles each way to & from the Shipton Street area, where he lived, to Nunthorpe School, (or is the original writer suggesting it was 10 miles each way?), I don't think much of his navigational skills.

[edit] England appointment

"However, his selection was praised by numerous other commentators, including Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Trevor Brooking" - Trevor Brooking was on the selection panel - so it would have been odd if he hadn't praised the appointment. As for Fergusson... well.. best left unsaid. Jooler 10:54, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] succeeded by: Terry Venables (Caretaker Manager)

[edit] McClaren walks out of press conference after only 1 minute and 55 seconds.

After the teams' 3-0 win over minnows Andorra on 28th March 2007, England's head coach stormed out of the post-match Press conference, responding to just two questions. This has increased pressure from the British media, who view his actions as further proof that he cannot cope with the pressure of leading his country.

"Nothing concerns me outside, what you write or what people say. What matters is inside. There's a great determination to prove people wrong. So, gentlemen, if you want to write whatever you want to write you can write it. Because that's all I'm going to say' - McClaren

[edit] Regarding the England Head Coach section

Is there any proof about the line which says that the FA will sack Steve if the fans continue to boo him? That sounds very farfetched, and I don't see even the Sun mention it. If there is no evidence, it may violate WP:BLP--Kylohk 20:30, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

I've decided to remove that paragraph. I can imagine the impact on Steve McClaren's life and career, and possibly provoke mass booings by any disgruntled England fans if it stays there. Hence I am removing it per WP:BLP, which states that articles on living persons must be written in a neutral, verifiable manner.--Kylohk 23:08, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Steve McClaren England

Is it wrong to write that he has lost the trust of the England fans when he so obviously has? As a fan and in being so knowing a large number of people who also are fans and in my ability to read papers and so gauge public opinion that in his time as England manager he was an unpopular choice to start with and has done nothing to improve his relationship to the fans. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Browner7680 (talk • contribs)

If you can find a RS that states he has lost the fans' backing then feel free to include it. Dave101talk  12:47, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
There are still a number of people out there who believe in the manager of the England team, no matter what predicament it is in. Even if many people are disappointed, it's still not neutral to say he's lost the trust.--Alasdair 05:52, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Obsession with Beckham

Why are there two boxed quotes about Beckham? Why aren't there quotes of what he said about Carragher? Why aren't there quotes about what he said about Sol Campbell returning? I'm sick of the numerous references to that overrated celebrity!

By the way, I don't know anybody who hasn't lost faith in McClaren! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.219.95.3 (talk) 08:16, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Closest rivals

I deleted the part which stated that Russia are Englands closest rivals, it simply isn't true. Englands rivals are Argentina, Germany and possibly Scotland.

It meant closest rivals in the qualification group, though I admit it could be seen that way--Mas 18 dl 18:26, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] nice one for protecting this...not

mclaren has been sacked:- http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/article492787.ece

and now we can't edit it. whoever took the decision to protect this for a whole day is a complete idiot, when it was so obvious that major events were going to happen over the next 24 hours

Orientcharlie (talk) 03:12, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Even when predictions come true, WP was not the place to be making them. And the people doing the crystal balling were also vandalizing the page with blatant vandalism as well. It was a good protect. Contact the protecting admin to put into the article the information on McClaren's getting sacked. Mr Which??? 04:46, 22 November 2007 (UTC)
"only 2 days needed" - still too long, given that the FA board is meeting at 8:30am UK time. I hope that an Admin is monitoring Five Live or Sky Sports News and will update this page appropriately as quickly as would normally have happened. Wikipedia is often at its best when covering breaking news -- please don't let that fail this time because of a few pissed-off vandals. LondonStatto (talk) 06:12, 22 November 2007 (UTC)
Check the revision history of the main article. If you still can't see why this one was full-protected for a short period, I can't help you. Mr Which??? 06:22, 22 November 2007 (UTC)
A short period, yes. Up until about 6am today would have been about right - let the people who've been watching the game in the pub sleep it off. Two days is too long when there are going to be developments this morning. LondonStatto (talk) 06:40, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

This should show up somewhere in administrator land and initiate them in to doing something. "Faced with a deciding qualifier against Croatia, England would have qualified with a draw or a win, irrespective of other results. McClaren made several key decisions including dropping Paul Robinson for Scott Carson and David Beckham for Shaun Wright-Phillips. These decisions did not pay off, and with Carson partly responsible for the first goal; England were 2-0 down after 14 minutes. The team clawed back the deficit after half time but ultimately went down to a Mladen Petrić goal in the 77th minute, 2-3. After a meeting on Thursday morning the Football Association chose to dispose McClaren[1] / McClaren is expected to lose his job[2]

The detail is necessary as its his final match...probably the last time he'll be in management for a while I expect

Rectify or delete the minnows link (Possibly link to European microstates)

[edit] McClaren Sacked

Literally just in: McClaren has been sacked by the F.A.

Hardly just in, I revealed this last night. Orientcharlie (talk) 10:29, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

No shit Sherlock, I didn't realise you worked for the FA.
It wasn't official until the FA's press conference at 1000 UTC. LondonStatto (talk) 10:38, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

I've just been past his house in Aislaby near Yarm. There are three satellite vans, and lots of cars outside his home. -Andrew Duffell (talk) 12:33, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Lock this page again?

Do you think, being as we're not going to hear from him for a while, that this page should be locked again? Just a suggestion... and it'll stop vandalism that'll probably come. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rup235 (talkcontribs) 14:15, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Place of birth

I've corrected McClaren's place of birth in the text. It was showing 'Howden, Yorkshire' per an article in the Telegraph but in fact is Fulford, York, as can be seen from numerous ghits[1] (including McClaren's own website). It was correct in the info box. --Malcolmxl5 (talk) 02:00, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Error in intro?

"His first commentary game will be Austria v Croatia on 8 June 2008 - a game in which he would have managed England in place of Croatia, had qualification been achieved"

Are we quite sure about this? I thought Croatia finished top of the group ahead of Russia so had England qualified surely, depending on results, they would have been more likely to qualify at the expense of Russia than Croatia. Aside from that, even if England had qualified in place of Croatia, England would most likely have had a higher co-efficent than Croatia and so could well have been placed in a different pot and may not have even been drawn into the same group as Austria. There is no mention of how England might have been involved in this game on the source given. Does anyone have any reliable source stating that England would definately have been drawn into the same group that Croatia have if they had qualified in their place? If not, I think this claim should be removed, there are any number of circumstances which could lead to England being drawn into a different group to which Croatia where drawn into. MarkB79 (talk) 20:39, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

I don't think information about his first commentary game is notable enough to be in the lead anyway. Remove the claim, and move the sentence into relevant area of the article. Mas 18 dl (talk) 21:16, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
Done. MarkB79 (talk) 22:19, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

No, on the basis of UEFA's coefficient system, had England qualified at the expense of Croatia, they'd have ended up in the same pot 2 (see UEFA.com)

Mind, had England, a team with millions of pounds worth of talent, some of the best players in the world, paid the highest salaries, playing at home in front of 90,000 fans, then FIFA ranked 8th in the world and managed by a man who earnt 4 million quid a year beaten Croatia by two clear goals, England would have won the group...had it not been for the wally with the brolly...c'est la vie!...Jw2034 (talk) 21:25, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Well fair enough, I wouldn't have expected Croatia to be seeded as high as Pot 2, but regardless it's all based on assumptions that England would have achieved certain results and qualified ahead of Croatia rather than Russia so it dosen't belong in the article. As for the wally with the brolley, he's off to FC Twente apparently to put a stop to their recent revival. MarkB79 (talk) 18:32, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] new section for life after england manager

perhaps an editor can create a suitable section for life after england manager? quite a few paragraphs which should not be under his england managerial career. --Xaiver0510 (talk) 15:23, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Done. Mas 18 dl (talk) 17:12, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image

Has anyone got a free image of him in his last game (with the brolly) to add to the article? If not, could a non-free image be used under fair use as Images with iconic status or historical importance: As subjects of commentary. or Film and television screen shots: For critical commentary as per Wikipedia:Non-free content? I think in terms of iconic status and significance to the history of english football (and hence popular culture), it could be justified in the article discussion...Jw2034 (talk) 22:10, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
