Talk:Steve Christian
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The CIA factbook (see Talk:Pitcairn Islands) says there are (or were ca. 2003) 12 able-bodies men. If that's correct, then the seven accused men should be described as "half of the adult male able-bodied populaton". That's messy....
There are also six other accused not currently living on Pitcairn.
[edit] Jurisdiction
No mention seems to be made in the article that the Pitcairners claim they are not under British jurisdiction and that therefore they are not bound by British law. Whether or not this will be upheld is doubtful, but I feel the claim should be noted. -Kasreyn 23:44, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

AAP General News Wire. Sydney: Jan 21, 2005. pg. 1" says 13 men were tried for sex attacks on young girls by adult men over a 40 year period." "..former Pitcairn mayor Steve Christian, was also convicted and sentenced to three years jail." Another source is "Island of Lost Girls; [Op-Ed] Dea Birkett. New York Times. ProQuest document ID: 725605881 Text Word Count 745 Document URL: http://proquest.umi.com/pqdweb?did=725605881&sid=4&Fmt=2&clientId=76566&RQT=309&VName=PQD which says "..child molesting was endemic. Girls were taken into the banana groves, pinned down and raped, sometimes by more than one man. This week, after a four-week trial, five Pitcairn men -- half the men on the island -- were found guilty of a horrific string of sexual offenses against minors stretching back more than 40 years (a sixth man pleaded guilty earlier). The island's mayor, Steve Christian, was convicted on five counts of rape against children as young as 12; he was sentenced yesterday to three years. Another man, Terry Young, was convicted of indecent assault on a 7-year-old, and more prosecutions are planned." Another article "UK: Court dismisses key part of Pitcairn appeal Chris Lines. AAP General News Wire. Sydney: Jul 10, 2006. pg. 1" Source type: Wire Feed ProQuest document ID: 1075570061 Text Word Count 474 Document URL: http://proquest.umi.com/pqdweb?did=1075570061&sid=4&Fmt=3&clientId=76566&RQT=309&VName=PQD says "Trials on the island in 2004 found six men guilty and one not guilty of crimes including rape, indecent assault and incest over a 30-year period." "The six men are former mayor Steve Christian, 55, and his son Randy Christian, 30, Steve Christian's father-in-law, Len Brown, 78, and his son Dave Brown, 49, plus postmaster Dennis Christian, 48, and Terry Young, 45." Does that seem in accord with WP:BLP? As the head of government, Steve Christian may have enough notability to have a separate article, if he is known for anything but the sex assaults and trial. I would encourage a redirect or merge with Pitcairn sexual assault trial of 2004. Edison 20:28, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
