[edit] Playing career
Steve Mason started his junior career with the 2005-06 OHL season with the London Knights. He was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. Mason started the 2007-08 NHL season with the Columbus Blue Jackets but was returned to his junior team after being a healthy scratch for Columbus' first two games of the season.
Mason led Canada to the gold medal against Team Sweden at the 2008 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships in Pardubice, Czech Republic. On January 4, 2008, hours before the semifinal game of the tournament, he was traded within the OHL from the London Knights to the Kitchener Rangers.
Upon returning from the World Junior Championships, Mason was recalled by the Blue Jackets on an emergency basis on January 7. He did not play and was returned to the OHL on January 11. Mason underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on April 18, which caused him to miss most of the OHL playoffs and all of the 2008 Memorial Cup (May 16 – May 25).[2] Kitchener won the OHL championship, but lost 4-1 in the Memorial Cup final against the Spokane Chiefs.
