Stephen William Henry "Steve" Lovell (born December 6, 1980 in Amersham, Buckinghamshire) is an English football striker, who currently is a free agent.
Lovell, sometimes known affectionately to fans as "The Shovel", started his career in 1998 when he joined A.F.C. Bournemouth. He then went on to play for Portsmouth, where he then played for Exeter City, Sheffield Utd and Queens Park Rangers on loan before signing for Dundee in the summer of 2002. It was at Dundee where Lovell made a name for himself. He spent 3 seasons there scoring 34 goals in 84 appearances.
In the summer of 2005, following Dundee's relegation from the Scottish Premier League, Lovell signed for Aberdeen. He made his debut against Kilmarnock on August 8, 2005. His first goal came against Rangers and he went on to hit a further nine that season.
Lovell certainly has proved a worthy signing for Aberdeen scoring a number of priceless late, late goals including 2 in separate matches against Inverness Caledonian Thistle in injury time maintaining Aberdeen's record of being one of only 3 Scottish teams their 'local' rivals have never beaten. Lovell also scored a consolation goal in the second leg of Aberdeen's UEFA Cup 2007-08 Round of 32 match against FC Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena.
On April 15, 2008, he was told he would not be offered a new contract by Aberdeen and would be free to leave in the summer along with six other players, and has since attracted interest from Scottish First Division clubs, with Dundee, St. Johnstone and his old club Bournemouth rumoured to be in the running for his signature.
He is currently dating singer/songwriter Amy Macdonald.
