Steven Robert "Steve" James (born November 29, 1949 in Coseley, England) is an English former footballer who played at centre-back.

James started his career as an apprentice at Manchester United in December 1966.[1] His first-team debut for the club came on 12 October 1968 against Liverpool. He scored 4 goals in 161 appearances (including 1 substitute appearance) during his United career before being transferred to York City in January 1976. He made his debut for the club against West Bromwich Albion in January 1976.[2] He missed the whole of the 1978–79 season with injury. He made 119 appearances and scored 2 goals for the club, and joined Kidderminster Harriers in May 1980.[2]
He played for the England Under 23s.[citation needed]
