Chia Kiah Hong Steve Chinese: 谢镜丰 (born November 3, 1970) is a former Non-Constituency Member of Parliament in Singapore. He is the Secretary General of the National Solidarity Party (NSP), a division under the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA).

[edit] Background and Early Life

Chia was educated at Nanyang Junior College and the National University of Singapore, as was a former President of the National University of Singapore Student Union (NUSSU). He was also posted into the Officer Cadet School, during his National Service days as an officer cadet, and was the only officer cadet to have graduated from the Officer Cadet Course not to have taken the Standard Obstacle Course test in OCS history. ^[1]

After graduating from NUS in 1995, he joined the National Solidarity Party and stood for the 1997 General Election contesting Hong Kah GRC. He was the youngest candidate then. In the 2001 General Election, he contested for Chua Chu Kang SMC and obtained 34.6% of the valid votes. As the candidate with the highest percentage of votes among the losing opposition candidates, he became a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament in the 10th session of the Parliament of Singapore. ^[2]

In the 2001 General election, then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong praised him that "this was a man who could pass off as a PAP man."

Chia was involved in a scandal when topless photos of his maid were discovered by his wife in his computer's "Recycle Bin". Steve Chia said that his maid agreed to pose for the photos and he did not force her to do it. ^[3] ^[4] Police investigation found no offence committed. He was the NCMP at that time.

Steve Chia was charged with beating a red light at the junction of Braddell Road and Bishan Road on 22 July 2005, resulting in his car crashing into a SBS Transit bus. ^[5] Pleading guilty to a reduced charge of driving without care, he was fined $900. ^[6]
