Stevan Šupljikac

Stevan Šupljikac (1786, Petrinja, southwest of Sisak, Croatia–December 15, 1848, Pančevo; Cyrillic: Стеван Шупљикац) was the first Duke (Voivod) of Serbian Vojvodina.
Before he became Serbian Duke, he was an Austrian general. He had entered the Austrian army in 1805. Between 1806 and 1814 he was officer of the Imperial French army. During the Russian Campaign of 1812, he was awarded with the Légion d'honneur. In 1814 he became again officer in Austrian army, where he was awarded with the Great Cross of the Iron Crown.
At the May assembly of Serbs in Sremski Karlovci in 1848, he was proclaimed first ruler of Serbian Vojvodina. He became the supreme military commander of Serb national troops on the October 6, but died in soon after. He was buried in Krušedol.
