Sterling is a village in Johnson County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 507 at the 2000 census.

Sterling is located at 40°27′43″N, 96°22′42″W (40.461893, -96.378355)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 507 people, 223 households, and 134 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,253.8 people per square mile (489.4/km²). There were 234 housing units at an average density of 578.7/sq mi (225.9/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.62% White, 0.39% Native American, and 0.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.18% of the population.

There were 223 households out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.9% were non-families. 36.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the village the population was spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 85.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.5 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $30,313, and the median income for a family was $43,036. Males had a median income of $28,839 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $16,302. About 4.5% of families and 6.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.9% of those under age 18 and 19.0% of those age 65 or over.
