Stephen Richards (born October 17, 1977 Chicago, USA) is vocalist and guitarist in the band Taproot.

Taproot is an Ann Arbor, Michigan based quartet formed in 1997 by Richards and long time friend and guitarist Mike DeWolf. Taproot burst onto the music scene in 2000, following the infamous "phone message" left by Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit threatening the band's career and Richards' physical being, after feeling blindsided by the fact that Taproot was exploring other options than the demo-deal he was offering.[citation needed] Taproot eventually signed up with Atlantic Records and released their debut album Gift in 2000, soon after beginning their first of two consecutive Ozzfest tours in 2000 and 2001. In October, 2002, Taproot released their second album Welcome with hit single "Poem" selling nearly the gold record sum of 500,000 albums. Taproot released their 3rd major label release Blue-Sky Research in 2005, and is currently working on an independent release back home in Michigan that will be released later this year.
