Stephen O. Rice

Stephen O. Rice (November 29, 1907 in Shedds, Oregon – November 18, 1986 in La Jolla, California) was a pioneer in the field of communication theory. He received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Oregon State University and did graduate work at Caltech and at Columbia University. He worked for nearly forty years at Bell Labs.
Rice's paper “Mathematical Analysis of Random Noise”, published in the Bell System Technical Journal, is widely considered to be a classic in its field. He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering and discovered the Rice distribution. In 1983 he was awarded the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal.
