Stephen John Hughes (born September 18, 1976 in Wokingham) is an English footballer. He currently plays for Coventry City.
[edit] Playing career
Hughes started out at Arsenal, where he made 79 appearances (42 of them as substitute) between 1995 and 2000. Unable to break into the first team under Arsène Wenger, he went on loan to Fulham in 1999, where he only played four games. He returned to Arsenal but was sold to Everton for £3 million on March 7, 2000.
Hughes played 33 games for Everton before being released on a free transfer on July 4, 2001, just 16 months after Everton signed him. Hughes then moved on to Watford that same month but only managed 17 games in two seasons due to injury.
He moved to Charlton Athletic in August 2003, again on a free transfer, but made no appearances that season and subsequently left again on a free transfer to join Coventry City in July 2004. As of August 2007, he had played over 100 games for the Sky Blues.
