Stephanie Jo Scully (previously Hoyland) is a fictional character on the Australian soap opera Neighbours. She entered the series in 1999, originally played by Emma Roche, but replaced by Carla Bonner after only three weeks of filming (all scenes filmed with Roche were reshot with Bonner playing the part). Despite the departure of all four of her siblings and her parents, Steph remains a mainstay in the show.

[edit] History

Steph was once an apprentice mechanic, working at Lou's Garage with Stuart Parker (Blair McDonough). She rides a motorbike and has extensive knowledge on how to repair it. She is an avid fan of Australian rules football, and supports Richmond Football Club. She has also made a partial tour of the Australian outback.

After a motorcycle accident involving her and Libby Kennedy (Kym Valentine), Steph became severely depressed, blaming herself for Libby's injuries; shortly afterwards, she threw out her biking leathers and announced that she was giving up her motorcycle. Libby then dumped Drew (Dan Paris), and an argument with Steph allowed her to get closer to him; after Libby married Drew and Drew died in a riding accident, the stress took its toll on Steph.

Steph then later became engaged to the wealthy Marc (David Karakai), Assistant Manager at Lassiter's Hotel, whose parents took over the hotel for a time. Marc's mother tried to dissuade her from marrying him, explaining that he was attempting to prove a point to his wealthy parents by marrying her. Ignoring this, she decided to go ahead with the wedding, but was left devastated at the alter when it was revealed that Marc had been getting closer to her sister Flick (Holly Valance); they later patched up their relationship before Flick left Erinsborough.

Soon after the Hoyland family arrived in Erinsborough, Summer (Marisa Siketa) became friends with Steph and pictured her as an ideal stepmother, attempting to get her and her father together. This did happen, against the wishes of Max's son Boyd (Kyal Marsh), who thought Steph was trying to replace Claire, Max's first wife who died a couple of years before.

As things became more stable, Steph found a cancerous lump in her breast, which was removed. She tried her best to hide this from Max, but he eventually found out. Adding to her stress was the arrival of Max's sister Izzy (Natalie Bassingthwaighte), who tried to get on with Steph, but with limited success. After the cancer, Steph proposed to Max and, in 2004, Stephanie Scully became Stephanie Hoyland, and a stepmother to Boyd and Summer. In 2005, Steph finally became pregnant, even after it seemed it wouldn't be possible, and after a failed adoption.

Near the end of 2005, Steph started having dreams where she and the deceased Drew were an item. Initially not knowing what the dreams meant, she eventually realised the cancer had returned, and a dark period of her life began; refusing treatment, she kidnapped her two-year-old brother Oscar Scully because she felt her mother was being irresponsible in letting Izzy and Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis) look after him. Having been found by Stuart, she was sectioned by him and Max, but it was later found her fever was caused by a virus, and that she was otherwise well apart from the cancer. Steph felt Max had betrayed her, and only after many arguments did the couple get back together.

Steph's baby was carried to term, and she gave birth naturally to Charlie Hoyland (Aaron Aulsebrook-Walker) on Monday, March 20, 2006. She then started treatment for the cancer, and was told soon after that the cancer was gone. Arguments ensued when Lyn wanted Charlie to be baptised while Steph didn't; Steph disowned Lyn for a time when Lyn decided to have him baptised behind his parents' backs. Her trust was regained when Lyn saved Charlie from Robert Robinson, who tried to gas Izzy and Charlie inside No. 22.

In early 2006, Steph began inventing products for babies. Her first Baby Belt idea gave her only small profits when Lyn rushed Steph into signing a contract giving Paul most of the rights to it. This backfired when a company accused them of patent violations, and Lyn had to sell her house, whilst Paul had to sell 9% of Lassiter's.

After Max mistakenly ran over and killed Cameron Robinson, thinking he was his evil twin brother Robert, his sister Elle Robinson took revenge by orchestrating events that made Max doubt his own sanity, leading him to check himself into a psychiatric ward. By the time she confessed to him what she had done, he had decided to leave and start a new life. This left Steph devastated, though Salvation Army representative Harold Bishop revealed he had been in touch to tell Steph to get on with her life.

In 2007, Max returned to Erinsborough after being caught by both Elle Robinson and Boyd's wife Janae (Eliza Taylor-Cotter). Max decided to try again with Steph, but even though they made progress, Max decided that things couldn't change back, and he took a new job at an oil rig, saying goodbye to his family. Although she had been feeling a growing attraction to Toadie - who had been attracted to her when she first moved to Erinsborough - he was now dating another woman. This relationship later failed, and Steph and Toadie began a relationship.

On August 28, 2007, Steph won a place in the local council after campaigning against Toadie. The following month Toadie proposed to Steph, but although she declined after her initial shock, she proved her commitment to their relationship by changing back to her maiden name of Scully.

A wedding date was finally set for March 2008, but many problems arose that prompted Toadie to question whether Steph really did want to marry, though she denied any uncertainty. On the day of the wedding, Steph took a long time to enter the church, and finally had trouble reading her vows. Toadie was then certain Steph did not want to marry him and broke it off, leaving Steph devastated, standing at the altar, and Toadie in the back room, humiliated.

Afterwards, Steph tried to apologise but Toadie refused; realising there was nothing she could say to make it up to him, she took Charlie to her mother's house at Shelly Bay for a few weeks. She returned to Erinsborough to find a still distraught (and unforgiving) Toadie, preparing to leave for a new law firm for a few months.

Steph decided to go along with Daniel Fitzgerald and Ned and Steve Parker for an SES Training Program. Despite their protestations as to her safety at a mine shaft, she refused to back down, resulting in her and Dan slipping, and falling down the shaft. They were eventually rescued by Ned and Steve; Steph had a broken arm, Ned had concussion, Dan had internal bleeding, and Steve was unhurt with just a few bruises.

Toadie has since returned and they are trying to return to the way they were, before they got together.
