In the 1999 election, Chadwick stood as the Labour Party candidate for the Rotorua seat, and defeated incumbent National Party MP Max Bradford. She has remained MP for Rotorua since then. At the 2005 election she was narrowly returned to Parliament by 662 or 0.02% more votes than her opponent [1].

Due to boundary changes for the 2008 general election, her seat is considered highly marginal although it is likely she will be returned to Parliament via a high list placing in any event.

In 2007 she was appointed to Cabinet as Minister of Conservation and Women's Affairs, as well as becoming an Associate Minister of Health.[2]
