Stephanie "Steph" Haydock is a character in Waterloo Road (TV series), portrayed by Denise Welch.
[edit] French
Steph Haydock is the head of French at Waterloo Road. She's a lenient teacher, knowing she can't control her classes. Due to this, her classes are usually 'running wild'. Nobody at the school has respect for her, not even her colleagues. She does share a distant friendship with Grantly Budgen and had a deep infatuation with Jack Rimmer, which became too obvious.
Steph was recently close to being fired after apparently lying about the affair between Brett Aspinall and Davina Shackleton (Davina being his current partner). Note that only the affair these two had before she knew he was a student and vice versa (before he knew she was a teacher, or rather assistant) was mentioned; the affair while Davina was with Rimmer has since to be surfaced to Jack. After Davina admits to having an affair with Brett (and not sending the letter for Steph's departure), Steph's job was no longer under threat.
Haydock is also known to speak too boldly, and mentions things she really shouldn't (but she probably does this purposely). An example was when Izzie and Tom announced their marriage in series 2, and Steph questioning how they can do that after Lorna's suicide. However, the marriage never happened as Izzie was stabbed to death soon afterwards by Jed Seddon, having attempted to save Jack Rimmer from being stabbed by him.
Steph's rivalry with Davina Shackleton has driven her to report her one-night stand with sixth-former Brett Aspinall to Rimmer, who only got over this when he realised it happened before either of them came to Waterloo road and that it meant nothing. Haydock then went on to tell Jerry Preston (the highly religious American sponsor) about Shackleton's encounter with Brett. Jerry demanded that she be sacked. Rimmer agreed only for a short while until he reinstated Davina and told Jerry where to go with his money. This has not made Steph give up on getting rid of her love rival.
She also houses Maxine Barlow (the on-off girlfriend of troublesome former pupil and current school catering assistant Lewis Seddon), a former drug addict who was thrown out of the family home at the age of 14.
[edit] Series 3
In a BBC press release, it has been confirmed that she is now the head of Pastoral, so she has taken over the former head of Pastoral, Kim Campbell. However, at the beginning of the second half of the series, she was in France with Tom Clarkson filling in for her. Upon her return, the pair briefly shared an office, before headteacher Rachel Mason informed Steph that Tom would be taking over the job permanently. However she was later made Financial Director. In 03x19 she was removed from the role of Finance Director after using sexual harassment as a means of getting money for the school. It has been confirmed that Steph will be appearing in Series 4 (which commences in October 2008).
