Stegmutt
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stegmutt is a fictional character in the Disney animated television series Darkwing Duck, a large, green anthropomorphic stegosaurus with a shaggy mop of orange hair. In addition to being quite big, Stegmutt is also incredibly strong, although his simple mind means that he does not know his own strength and occasionally breaks things accidentally. He was voiced by Joey Camen.
[edit] Character History
Stegmutt first appears, chronologically, in the episode Jurassic Jumble. He is the assistant of mad scientist and duck-turned-dinosaur Dr. Fossil, and the former janitor of the natural history museum until Fossil de-evolved him using his Retro-Evolution Gun. Although Fossil plans to bring about a global cataclysm to mimic the extinction of the dinosaurs by summoning down the Cleanser Comet, Stegmutt remains blissfully unaware of his employer's real intentions, due to Fossil keeping him in the dark. Thus Stegmutt blindly obeys orders, kidnapping lawyers Shyster and Loophole and later stealing the world's largest magnet, all without knowing precisely what it is that Fossil is up to. Ultimately, though, Gosalyn and Honker are able to convince Stegmutt that Fossil is evil, and Stegmutt plays a pivotal role in foiling the evil scientist's plan by realigning the magnet to repel, rather than attract, the comet.
Stegmutt next appears in parts 1 and 2 of Just Us Justice Ducks, where we find that, in the wake of the defeat of Dr. Fossil, he has gotten a job as a hotdog vendor. Stegmutt also reveals that before becoming a dinosaur, he had previously been a duck. For reasons not explained, Stegmutt was still a dinosaur and never got evolved back like Darkwing (and presumably Fossil's other victims of de-evolution) did, despite disliking his stegosaurus form. Being a dinosaur, he scares away potential customers too often, much to his annoyance. However he manages to serve Darkwing a hotdog, and while attempting to give him his change, inadvertently interferes with a battle between Darkwing and enemies Bushroot and the Liquidator. Stegmutt's childlike mind is most evident here, as he misunderstands Darkwing's sarcasm when he says he's not fighting the two villains but playing a game of "Let's Pretend," and asks if he can play too. Bushroot and Liquidator take advantage of this and tell Stegmutt to pretend Darkwing is on fire. Stegmutt then proceeds to "put out the Darkwing," slamming him repeatedly into the ground in an effort to put out the imaginary fire. By the time Stegmutt realizes his mistake, Bushroot and Liquidator have escaped.
Later, in another misguided attempt to give Darkwing his change, Stegmutt finds himself on the Audobon Bay Bridge with Darkwing, Morgana, Gizmoduck, and Neptunia when Negaduck and the rest of the Fearsome Five use the Electro-Slave Device to create an electric wall around St. Canard. Thereafter, Stegmutt joins the Justice Ducks (rationalizing that although he is not a duck, he used to be), and ends up facing Quackerjack on his own. He is defeated when Quackerjack douses him with knockout gas, and later finds himself in Negaduck's torture chamber, floating inside of a large glass chamber without gravity. Negaduck gleefully announces that when he throws "The Switch!" all the air will be sucked out of the chamber, suffocating Stegmutt. Stegmutt is saved from this awful fate by the timely arrival of Darkwing, who frees the other Justice Ducks, allowing Gizmoduck to free Stegmutt from the chamber using a glass cutter.
Stegmutt then participates in the final battle against the Fearsome Five, and repays Bushroot for tricking him earlier by playing "Put out the Bushroot!" He also finally manages to give Darkwing his change back at the end of the episode, but Darkwing tells him he can keep it.
Like the rest of the characters on the show, Stegmutt seems to be a parody of several comic book characters. His child-like demeenor and massive strength are often considered a light hearted parody of The Hulk. Like the Hulk, Stegmutt's actions are often unintentionnally destructive.
