ParsonsRep(talk) Appreciate you alerting me to the problem with the image on Extended Validation Certificate. [edit] In his steps...
Its a dvd cover. What's the problem? I have images deleted that clearly say DVD cover in the corner. Why does wikipedia allow the option of uploading DVD covers when they are automatically deleted? Its extremely irritating. There is nothing wrong with the image. If anything its free promotion for a dead independent film.

[edit] Notability of Bupenda
Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Bupenda, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Bupenda seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Bupenda, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Hey, this is Christopher. If you think I was wrong to set that picture as fair rationale, or doing it just so I could illegally get a picture onto my page, well I wasn't. The fair rationale said something like "picture of a person" or whatever. You guys should seriously think about screwing the copyright stuff and just let us paste in a picture. [edit] image:1944 Loop Master.png
I see you have tagged my image for 1944: The Loop Master for failing to comply a sutible rationale for it to be considered fair use. First of all, I HAVE posted a rationale on it, one I have used for other images I have uploaded previously. Since my return to Wikipedia after my absence due to ill health, I recognise there has been a change in the Summery which now uses a table to describe an image rather than plain text. Since I am not normally a good reader, I declined using it and until I am shown how it the table works I decided to stick to my original rationale which I had used previoulsy which so far has generated no problems.
If you wish to contact me on my user page about the matter I will appriciated it.

[edit] Lela Tsurtsumia album cover
Hello, I'll explain:
This is photo of Lela Tsurtsumia's album "Live" front cover, SCANNED BY ME. copyright about this whole album has "Studio Tbilisi" and Lela's producer Kakha Mamulashvili. album is mixed in the "Maestro Records" label, and the live concert is recorded and filmed in "IMEDI TV STUDIO". So, at first I wrote the article about this album in Georgian wikipedia: ka.wikipedia.org Georgian wikipedia's admins permitted me to upload this cover cause it's scanned by me. [edit] New image
So I go to add a new image of Sheila Sim via the Special:Upload page. That talks about adding the copyright notices which I'm well aware must be done. But it doesn't say how to actually do it or do it for you. In the couple of minutes it takes me to look up the details I find that it's already been hit by one of those over-officious bots (STBotI) which makes it all the harder to finish editing the copyright details correctly. Why do I bother? Try giving people a chance to finish off what they're doing before you threaten to delete it -- SteveCrook (talk) 20:15, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
- The bot's on a 5 minute delay. If that isn't enough, then fix your tag and remove the warning. Not a big deal. --uǝʌǝsʎʇɹnoɟʇs(st47) 20:44, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Near null edit
Hey ST47/STBotl, I see that you have tagged an image as having no licensing information, but after I already tagged it. I tagged it with TWINKLE, so if you have done the right thing, I'll have to bring t up with AzaToth. Soxred93 | talk bot 20:38, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

About the tag that you have placed on (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Habib_dastoor.png). How to remove the tag? Note that the text that I have put in the image was already in the corresponding Wikipedia page (typed in English alphabet). I just generated the image with the language's native alphabet. It is just a couplet from one of the works of the Poet, and was banned in the country by the authorities. [edit] Fair Use of Palyam emblem (Semel)
I received your message re fair use of the Palyam emblem, but this is the same emblem displayed on the Hebrew Wikipedia page to which the Palyam page in English is linked. In fact, the fair use explanation for this emblem that I used is the same fair use explanation as quoted in Hebrew. Given that it is a regimental emblem, of a naval unit over fifty years old, and public use of the emblem is accepted by both US and Israeli copyright laws, what is the issue? --StevenBirnam[[User talk:StevenBirnam|StevenBirnam]16:23, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
- Fair use only applies to coryrighted images - you need to add one of these tags, but not knowing the situation with your image, I don't know which one. If you need help locating the right tag, try asking at the copyright desk. --uǝʌǝsʎʇɹnoɟʇs(st47) 23:33, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] The Indigo Belly dance
Hello I am new to all this, it is all rather confusing, i apologize if i violated any rules when posting the image you tagged. The image I used originally for my Indigo belly dance company article was off their myspace page, Underneath that image is a 'SHARE' option, which allows you to post the image to various other websites. When I was trying to explain the use of the image, i could not find an option which best described it's use. I know the copyright belongs to the dance company and that it is a promotional picture that they put online and it can be shared freely and posted on to other websites via the link beneath the picture on myspace, does that not mean the image is ok to use? I changed the image to one of one of The Indigo's performers instead, that was already on another wiki page so i figured that would be ok. I did read the guidelines but it is all very confusing. Your advice would be appreciated, Thanks ChaosBaby (talk) 00:19, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Please put one up for this bot, I was still searching for the appropriate license tag for the image (Image:CF 001015.jpg) I just uploaded when I got a message from this dumb bot and it wasn't even more than 2 minutes after I uploaded the image. WTH%$#@! Well, on another note... this darned bot does work albeit it still needs a bit of tuning by the owner, OR I could use my Matador missile on it granted if there is not going to be any self-destruct button after all. -- Dave1185 (talk) 11:58, 6 April 2008 (UTC) 08:03, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- I was just going to add more or less the same as above, maybe without the belligerent implication. Shut it down, it does more harm than good: it is counter-productive and demotivating. There are no "copyright problems" with the image I just uploaded. Give me a break! <KF> 10:39, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- There quite obviously are, owing to the fact that you both received messages. There are a few things you did wrong:
- You obviously didn't even read the message the bot left. If you had, you would have had a useful comment.
- You didn't read our image policy. If you had, you'd have followed it in the first place.
- You didn't read the nice box at the top of this page. Specifically, you have failed to follow points 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15. I might be able to help you if you had included a link. Or if I even knew who you were. You might have been able to help yourself if you had read any of the relevant policy.
- You came here and demanded the bot be shut down without proving to me that the bot is malfunctioning. I'd personally rather shut you down.
- But yes, I'll allow the obviously foolish and misguided masses to shut down this bot on a whim, they're obviously smarter than the Board of the Wikimedia Foundation. --uǝʌǝsʎʇɹoɟʇs(st47) 11:37, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

- I don't think anything has been resolved here, and I'm not quite sure to whom the word "troll" refers. All I'm saying is that it is very discouraging, especially for newcomers, to be told the moment you have uploaded a picture you have taken yourself that there are copyright problems concerning that picture when you are in fact just choosing the licence tag you want to add to it. So why this bot can't do its job, say, one hour after an image has been uploaded will remain a mystery to me, in spite of your long sermon about all the things I've failed to read. By the way, you haven't read what it says at the top of my talk page either. Best wishes, <KF> 13:13, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- I must say this as a lowly plebian editor, his highness almighty doesn't even bother to look into my request when I submitted it. All I ask on his talk page was to help me delete a certain image I had uploaded, which I then found a exact duplicate copy in wiki commons, thus rendering my effort down the stinky sewers but at least I tried. Anyway, who or where can I turn to in order to get this message posted with regards to delete this redundant image of mine (Image:HU 002675.jpg) which I had tagged it with {{db-g7}}, dated about 6 hours ago. I wonder... --Dave1185 (talk) 15:01, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Can you do something about this bot tagging photo's that do have a copyright tag but transcribed through another template (like on this template) which it has recently started doing. [edit] RE: Fair use rationale for Image:Surviving Antarctica Cover.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Surviving Antarctica Cover.jpg. You've indicated that the image meets Wikipedia's criteria for non-free content, but there is no explanation of why it meets those criteria. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. If you have any questions, please post them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 00:50, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
- It is Cover Art, so it falls under The number one in this link. Under "Images". --Obaidz96 (talk) 01:06, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] RE: duplicate image
Regarding duplicate images of http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8f/Mithun_in_Gunda.jpg, I was trying to add this photo here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mithun_Chakraborty. Somehow, it didnt succeed even on 2nd attempt. Feel free to delete the 2nd version of the file. I'll search around to find how exactly to add a photo to celebrity's page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Groovy12 (talk • contribs) 00:29, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] RE: Disputed fair use rationale for Image:And some were human.jpg}
Hi,
You left me a note and tagged the Image:And some were human.jpg, stating that the image does not have a valid link in each article where it is used. The image is only used in the article ...And Some Were Human and the rationale that I added when I uploaded the image does in fact include a link to the article. If there is some other problem with the image, please let me know.--Rtrace (talk) 13:20, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Speedy deletion of Image:Items from the Canadian Parliamentary Flag Program.jpg
A tag has been placed on Image:Items from the Canadian Parliamentary Flag Program.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I8 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons under the same name, or all references to the image on Wikipedia have been updated to point to the title used at Commons.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Gary King (talk) 20:33, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Bot not handling special characters ok?
STBotl tagged Image:Okami-ps2-wii-comparison.jpg with a #10c invalid rationale, but I had definitely included the correct article name (Ōkami, note the special character at the start) in the FUR template (and it links fine and the like). I'm assuming this is a bug and removing the warning. --MASEM 04:09, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Malfuncioning bot
I noticed a few problems with the bot operation where it has been missing valid fair use rationales (e.g. here). There were a number of other examples too that I found in the history. I'm not going to block it because I'm off to lunch right now and want to avoid WP:AN/I "I blocked ##### bot" drama, but you should really fix that ASAP. - Hi. In the past few minutes, the bot tagged some free images with {{di-no fair use rationale}} [6] [7]. Bláthnaid 16:52, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
- It must be missing them for some reason since they're on commons. I'll add a check for that. --uǝʌǝsʎʇɹoɟʇs(st47) 17:21, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, I've just blocked in case it is wrong. Could you let me know if it needs fixing or whether this is expected behaviour? Thanks. --Rodhullandemu (Talk) 17:24, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
- I just said I fixed it. --uǝʌǝsʎʇɹoɟʇs(st47) 20:28, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks ST47. I left a message on WP:AN/I just before you replied here, because I though you might be away from your computer. The bot is also tagging images with valid rationales. Bláthnaid 17:31, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
- I've added that template to my whitelist. The tagging of that image really isn't a bug. --uǝʌǝsʎʇɹoɟʇs(st47) 20:31, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
- You might already be aware of this, but some non-free images with valid rationales were tagged as having no rationale after the bot was unblocked: [8] [9] [10]. These images used {{book cover fur}}, so that might be the problem. (Maybe not, I know nothing about bots!) Regards, Bláthnaid 16:54, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Bot adding fair-use warnings to public-domain images
The bot is malfunctioning. See this version of my talk page:
Check out the image description pages for the linked images in the comments at the end of the talk page. The images have public-domain licenses, not fair-use rationales. --Timeshifter (talk) 19:21, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] UTF encoding broken in edit summary
This edit has a broken character in the edit summary (compare the image name in the actual diff, which is correct). Perhaps the character encoding isn't right on the edit summary. — Carl (CBM · talk) 15:03, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
- And yea, I can't find any direct faults in the rationale in question, could it be that the bot isn't fully aware of unicode? →AzaToth 17:51, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
- Unicode sucks. I don't have the slightest clue how to properly deal with it. If there exists a programmer who knows how to do it the right way in Perl, by explaining what to do with the unicode text when it's loaded, how to process it, and how to re-save it, examples would be nice. --uǝʌǝsʎʇɹoɟʇs(st47) 02:57, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- I mostly figured out how to get it right when I was writing my Perl libraries.
- Fact: Perl likes to store data in an internal format that is not UTF-8.
- Fact: when you get data from an XML parser or from LWP::UserAgent, it will not be utf-8-encoded, it will be in the internal Perl format.
- Solution 1: set
binmode STDIN, ":utf8";
,binmode STDOUT, ":utf8";
, and binmode every other filehandle utf8. This will take care of decoding from UTF-8 to internal format when reading files and encoding into UTF-8 when saving files. - Solution 2: if you send data to LWP::UserAgent, you need to use Encode.pm and say
encode("utf8", $foo)
instead of just$foo
.
- It's very similar to host/network byte order in IP if you have ever done any network programming where that was important. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:22, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- If you show me the code, I might be able to find out what's going on. I have a bit of experience with Unicode in Perl. Fut.Perf. ☼ 08:36, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- Carl: I get errors that say "decoding entities in undecoded utf-8 will give garbage" or something like that when I load the data from the web. Can that be safely ignored? Can I use encode.pm to get the utf-8 data on wikipedia into a usable format? I'll test and implement your other suggestion when I have a chance.
- FPAS: I think most of the problem code is here, though it also uses this code. --uǝʌǝsʎʇɹoɟʇs(st47) 15:49, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- The warning you quoted probably can't be safely ignored. Do you get that error when you are parsing the xml? If so, maybe you are running into an issue I ran into once, which is that the API has a more liberal idea of what UTF-8 is than the XML parser does. You may want to look at the Mediawiki::API code that I wrote, esp. the makeHTMLrequest and parse_xml functions, to see how to work around that. The svn link is at User:VeblenBot;
I don't have a fisheye account set up.The general paradigm of my code is that the data returned is in native format, and the data that is passed in needs to be utf-8 encoded first. That code is highly field tested and seems to handle unicode text correctly. — Carl (CBM · talk) 16:50, 22 April 2008 (UTC)- (That code will be clearer once I tell you that makeHTMLrequest should be called makeHTTPrequest, but I have never gotten around to renaming the function). — Carl (CBM · talk) 16:55, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- I had my svn repository added to fisheye; the code I was talking about is in API.pm. — Carl (CBM · talk) 20:34, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

- The basics of handling Unicode in Perl:
- Perl strings come in two flavors: Unicode and bytes.
- Strings coming in from the outside world (files, standard input, sockets, etc.) are assumed to be in byte flavor unless you say otherwise.
- Literal strings and other internally-generated strings are assumed to be in Unicode flavor.
- When writing a program, you need to keep mental track of which strings are in which flavor. The easiest way to do this is to convert everything to Unicode-flavor as soon as you get it.
-
- For files, open for input with "<:utf8" if the file is UTF-8-encoded.
- For LWP, use $response->decoded_content
- For standard input, stick "binmode STDIN, ":utf8";" at the beginning of your program (assuming that your terminal or other data source is UTF-8 or ASCII).
- When outputting strings, keep track of whether the data destination can take Unicode-flavored strings or needs byte-flavored strings
-
- LWP needs byte-flavored strings: use Encode::encode("utf8", $string) to produce them for a POST body, URI::Escape::uri_escape_utf8 to encode URLs.
- For standard output, stick "binmode STDOUT, ":utf8";" at the beginning of your program (assuming that your terminal is expecting UTF-8 strings).
- To write UTF-8 text to files, open for output with ">:utf8".
- I see one specific error in the code you've linked to: in Perlwikipedia.pm, edit() function, you're encoding the text but not the edit summary. --Carnildo (talk) 20:37, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- To translate, what I call "internal" strings are what Carnildo calls "Unicode" strings, and this is what the Perl people also call them. UTF-8 encoded strings are what Carnildo calls "byte strings". I found this confusing at first. — Carl (CBM · talk) 20:47, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- Carnildo: thank you very much - I've fixed the specific error you stated, and I'll go through my code fixing everything else.
- Carl: Wait - I've always thought unicode was utf-8. :( --uǝʌǝsʎʇɹoɟʇs(st47) 21:29, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- Me too, which is why I was confused for a while. We don't have a great article to look at, but Character encoding#Modern encoding model is OK. Unicode specifies a "code point" for each character (an integer). These code points are what you look up in Unicode tables like wikibooks:Unicode/Character_reference/0000-0FFF. Then UTF-8 is a compressed representation of these 32 bit characters, so that the ASCII letters only take one byte each. So you can "encode" a sequence of code points into UTF-8 and then "decode" it to get back the original sequence of code points. — Carl (CBM · talk) 21:55, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

- The basics of handling Unicode in Perl:

- What I call "byte strings" don't need to be UTF-8 encoded -- they can just as easily be EBCDIC, ISO-8859-1, or Shift JIS. The reason I refer to Perl's internal strings as "Unicode" is that that's the best mental model of them: a series of Unicode code points, since the actual in-memory representation doesn't matter. And no, Unicode is not UTF-8: UTF-8 is an encoding of Unicode. If you work on Windows, you'll encounter UTF-16BE, while MacOSX uses the full set of Unicode encodings. --Carnildo (talk) 21:55, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Wanted to ask for your thoughts on this image, which was tagged per NFCC#10c, but appears to have the article name in the fur (see the .jpg&oldid=207139763 bot's edit). Not sure if I am missing something or if there is a bug (perhaps there is an issue with the article name being quoted). Thanks. - AWeenieMan (talk) 23:27, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] OptOut request
Please remove me from receiving notifications. I had my fill of them during the Betacommandbot era and have no desire to see my talk page flooded again, especially since there appears to be a malfunction (discussed by another editor above) that is resulting in images being erroneously tagged that have already been dealt with. As far as I'm concerned any images I care about have either been deleted or handled via the efforts of Bláthnaid and other editors and any future tagging is erroneous and will be addressed by others. I am agreeing to the opt-out requirements that existed at the time of the datestamp after my user name, and I am not agreeing to any changes that may occur to these requirements after this datestamp. Thanks. 23skidoo (talk) 00:03, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

for helping me clear several years worth of wikipedia efforts off the . . ....... page or whatever. Your grasp of Icelandic copyright laws amazes me. - This is exactly like talking to a machine, since STBotI is an automatic bot. Icelandic copyright laws are irrelevant, we follow copyright laws in the USA, where our datacenter is, foundation licensing policy, or our own content policy, whichever is most restrictive. --uǝʌǝsʎʇɹoɟʇs(st47) 21:21, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
