[edit] Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Starrycupz, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. You can support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact our administrator general Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

[edit] Plant categories

Hi, I appreciate your energy in filling up the garden plants and flowers categories, but it's probably a lost cause, since there are many thousands of plants grown in gardens, and by definition there are at least a quarter-million flowering plants - category inclusion decisions based on the size or showiness of the flowers is probably too subjective to be worthwile (some of the prettiest wildflowers out here in the desert are only a centimeter across, for instance). Stan 20:23, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

I'm afraid I have to agree with Stan. There are thousands of genera, and hundreds of thousands of species and cultivars, of plants. Wikipedia is an international encyclopedia, which means that just about any plant might be a "garden plant" somewhere in the world, and as Stan says, the criteria are simply too subjective. Aside from the category being too broad to be useful in the first place, using your own personal criteria of "plant I have grown myself" or "common garden plants here in the UK" to add to such a category is probably not going to be helpful to the majority of Wikipedia users. MrDarwin 21:52, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
I agree with Stan and MrDarwin, for all the reasons mentioned. In addition, categories tend to accumulate at the end of articles, so it's important that they be useful.--Curtis Clark 04:46, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Age category

Hello! If you are receiving this message, that means that your user page is in a specific year category. Per a recent user-category per deletion, all specific year categories are to be deleted. If you wish to continue using year categories, you have two options:

  • Using an age group category, such as Category:Wikipedians in their 30s
  • Using a decade category, such as Category:Wikipedians born in the 1970s.

If you wish, you may do both. Hopefully, this change in categorization will be quick and painless. Happy editing! --An automated message from MessedRobot 12:42, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Photograph polynesia et al

I can only assume one would tag them all, or place them on the board for speedy deletion one after another. Jonomacdrones 22:44, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] thanks :)

Thank you for the welcome. I've actually been a long-time member, just changed accounts (I actually shared one with my S.O. which I guess is probably frowned upon) but this one is my own. I'll read your links anyway and I hope I can add some kind of valuable input to the Wiki.

[edit] Taking the mickey

Hey, I'm looking for a second opinion from a user actually in England as to whether Taking the mickey could ever become a decent Wikipedia article. — The Storm Surfer 03:14, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] London Meetup - January 12, 2008

Hi! There's going to be a London Wikipedia Meetup coming Saturday January 12, 2008. If you are interested in coming along take part in the discussion over at Wikipedia:Meetup/London7. The discussion is going on until tomorrow evening and the official location and time will be published at the same page late Thursday or early Friday. Hope to see you Saturday, Poeloq (talk) 03:16, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Removal of category from your userpage

Hi. In enacting consensus from User categories for discussion, I have removed the category Category:Wikipedians interested in books from your userpage. It was determined in that deletion debate that this category should be depopulated of individuals, but kept as a parent category. If you wish to display a category reflecting your interest in books, please consider one of the specific sub-categories under its umbrella. Thanks, and please excuse the necessary editing of your user page! ----Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:49, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Dunstable Downs

Hi. Thanks for your message. I've copied it to Talk:Dunstable and Whipsnade Downs and replied there. I think that will be more useful for future editors who want to find any previous discussions about the article. JonH (talk) 18:41, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
