Apophis is an open source/free first-person shooter game currently in development, and is the first game of a planned trilogy. It is currently in the planning stages. The plot, setting, and gameplay mechanics are similar to Crysis.

Apophis is based in a fictional future where an alien race has invaded Earth. The single player campaign has the player assume the role of United States Delta Force operator Joseph D. Hayes (Assyria). Hayes is armed with various futuristic weapons and equipment, most notably an AMMPNAMEXOS suit. In Apophis, the player fights both Malaysian and extraterrestrial enemies, in three different locations: Peninsular Malaysia (both tropical and frozen); an American aircraft carrier; and on the lunar surface, the interiors of the alien base are zero-gravity.

[edit] Gameplay

Apophis is an open-ended game, with countless ways to meet objectives. In addition to which most weapons may be modified with devices such as suppressors, telescopic sights, and targeting lasers, weapons can be disassembled and rebuilt with different components.

The protagonist, Joseph Hayes, is also capable of being modified and upgradable, as he wears a military prototype AMMPNAMEXOS suit. The suit is capable of four modes: armor, strength, speed, and stealth. These modes allow him to absorb and heal damage, lift and throw heavy items and enemies, reload and run faster, and become partially invisible and reduce noise output, respectively. Due to the ability of constantly regenerating health in armor mode, the game will be completely devoid of first aid kits. All of these actions, however, use rechargeable energy reserves that power the suit; energy is recharged most quickly while in armor mode. The suit can be modified in-game to meet the playing style of the player. In addition, you could interface with handheld devices, computers, and others, and you could carry more inventories using the suit's Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment.

[edit] Story

Set in 2029, Apophis' plot follows Lieutenant Joseph D. Hayes – codenamed "Assyria" – a United States Army Delta Force operator. As Apophis begins, an American team of ufologists are taken captive by the Malaysian Army, just as they were investigating a mysterious UFO incident, which partly resulted the crash on the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. The United States responds by deploying a team of Delta Force operators – supported by the USS Sovereign – who take part in the fighting between the United States and Malaysia. Soon, though, it becomes apparent that the UFOs in Malaysia are actually alien vessels. During this phase of the game, the setting is mainly be a tropical environment.

More alien ships land across Malaysia, and begins to xenoform the country, by flash-freezing the entire landscape with temperatures nearing minus 200 degrees Fahrenheit. This affects weather patterns around the planet, causing thunderstorms and earthquakes. Alien machines begin attacking both the Americans and Malaysians. Joseph Hayes wanders into the crashed alien ship in Kuala Lumpur and begins to explore the weightless environment, retrieving valuable information about the alien invaders. The recoil of weapons combined with the zero-gravity environment propels players back, while shell casings from weapons float nearby.

[edit] Development

The roots of Apophis can be traced back to the year 2002, where it was developed as Humanoid Aliens!: Into Evolution. Its plot would have featured a similar protagonist, Commander Joseph Dent-Hayes, fighting a horde of humanoid extraterrestrials under the leadership of Javibrif Lravik, the antagonist of the game. Like Duke Nukem Forever, the game has been hindered by poor developer experience, several rewrites, as well as engine technology restarts.

In November 2004, Humanoid Aliens!: Into Evolution has switched to the RealmForge GDK (now Visual3D .NET). Yet, the game is still in development hell, until in 2005, where it was postponed indefinitely.

In June 2007, Humanoid Aliens!: Into Evolution is revived as Apophis, and contains a different story. Originally intended to use Sauerbraten, but later switch to OGRE 3D (and Yake) and finally the Axiom Engine.
