  • shield: shield for the road with no markup (ex. US 6.svg)
  • road: full name of the road, no markup (ex. U.S. Route 6)
  • dab: optional disambiguation, such as west for Interstate 84 (west)
  • state: state that the current article is detailing
  • statebefore: state prior to the current state
  • stateafter: state after the current state

Alternately, for Interstates and U.S. Routes, Template:Compact state detail browse can be used with type and route instead of shield and road. For example, {{Compact state detail browse|type=I|route=1|state=Oregon|statebefore=California|stateafter=Washington}} produces:
