Talk:State university (disambiguation)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

State college redirects to State university, but State College is the name of the moderately sized city in Pennsylvania which is home to one of the largest universities in the world, Penn State. I'm not sure if changing the redirect to point to State College, Pennsylvania would be appropriate though, if the majority of the public is searching for state-run colleges. So what would be the best way to change things, because as of now there is no way to get to State College's page without typing in the entire state and name. Any advice? [edit] US centric

Aren't both this page and state college still rather US-centric? Andrewa 20:40, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Fixed I think. Andrewa 01:50, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
I can see why this is US-centric, but the use of the term within Wikipedia is overwhelmingly in articles about US universities. In fact, there were only 2 links out of more than 150 to State University that weren't seeking State university system (United States) (and neither of them would have been served by any of the alternatives on the dab page anyway). So I can't help but think that we help the reader most often by getting them directly to State university system (United States). Planetneutral 05:53, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Survey - in support of the move

  1. Support as nominator. Andrewa 01:36, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Survey - in opposition to the move

  1. Oppose. I know we've had this discussion before, and I know that correcting bias is a good thing. If you don't like Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Primary topic, though, it would be better to talk about changing that guideline than attempting to change the setup of pages in opposition to the guideline. Add any additional comments:

This has been fixed once before. I thought then that it could be fixed without needing to go to WP:RM, but obviously not. As the disambiguation page itself shows, there are state universities (many more of them than currently shown in fact) outside of the USA. To have state university redirect as at present to State university system (United States) is nothing short of embarrassing!

However, that's exactly the result of this move, which didn't go through RM either. The justification given that All links to State university are seeking State university system (United States) is not IMO valid; People get to Wikipedia pages by many means, including links from other sites (even other WikiMedia projects) and search engines (including our own internal search mechanism).
