removed references to Hawaii not having a state police as it does have a Hawaii Department of Public Safety, Headed by the Hawaii State Sheriff, which does perform some of the duties of a state police force, such as protecting state property, operating state prisons, patrolling some state properties and waterways.--Tomtom 05:49, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] State trooper

Is "state trooper" synonymous with "state police officer"?

The State of California has a State Police force, which is distinct from the Highway Patrol.

[edit] National State police

Italy, Carabineri: The word "carabinieri" is a plural, so "Carabinieri is" should be "Carabinieri are".

Netherlands: The text about the Netherlands contains errors - it is better to delete then let it stand as it is - there is no real equivalent of "State police" in the Netherlands. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 213.84.195.80 (talk) 23:06, 24 April 2007 (UTC).

...and Italy, and Australia, etc. I removed the Netherlands and other state police agencies that are national rather than sub-national. It's primarily a US topic, though there are rough equivalents in other countries, which I left in. Not much point in cataloging police forces in other countries only to say how they're not state police in the same sense. (There are other articles for national police, territorial police force and so on where those agencies are relevant). In the future, 213.84.195.80, feel free to be bold and make any changes you feel are improvements to the article yourself. Cheers, bobanny 21:48, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Why remove Australia? State police are not primarily a US topic when there are a number of federations in the world that maintain similar organisations. All the Australian states have a police force that is by any reasonable definition a 'state police' force: a police organisation providing law enforcement services to a sub-national territory of a federal state. RI does not have a separate highway patrol. The State Police handles that. 72.192.22.209 05:32, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "Australia is unique..."

What is so unique about Australia? The German police is organized in a very similar manner: The primary police force is the state ("Land") police. There is no municipal police (except for parking enforcement and similar low-profile tasks), and the federal police only has a very limited scope.193.196.193.21 15:38, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
