Stay Awhile/I Only Want To Be With You is the first album of singer Dusty Springfield to be released in the USA. Springfield's British debut album A Girl Called Dusty was released around the same time. The album is considered a hybrid of Springfield's British debut album, the two singles of the unwieldy title, and other Springfield recordings. Her American label, the American arm of Philips Records, decided to include the singles on an album, rather than following the British practice of leaving them as singles. In addition, some B-sides and other recordings were pieced together to form Stay Awhile/I Only Want To Be With You. After her second, third, and fourth American albums, Ooooooweeee!!! You Don't Have to Say You Love Me, and The Look of Love were put together the same way, Springfield reportedly left the American Philips label in response to this haphazard manner of piecing together albums that were not what she had worked to produce.
As such, Stay Awhile/I Only Want To Be With You and her following three American releases are not generally considered to be among the 'true' Dusty Springfield albums, or a part of her official discography.
