Statue of Judgement
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Statue of Judgement is a fictional structure in the Judge Dredd comic strip in 2000 AD. It is a mammoth statue of a Mega-City Judge, built in Mega-City One where New York City once was, next to the Statue of Liberty. In some stories it has been called the Statue of Justice. It first appeared in 2000 AD prog 7 in 1977.
It has been drawn by various artists (originally Mike McMahon), who have not been consistent in depicting its size, although it is always shown to be larger than the Statue of Liberty. In some illustrations Liberty is shown to be around waist-height to Judgement; in others knee- or ankle-height.
The original Statue of Judgement was built in 2099.[1] It used to tower over the Statue of Liberty, before the Liberty statue was destroyed by terrorists.[2] The Statue of Judgement was itself destroyed in 2115, and was rebuilt in 2117.[3] The new building is the headquarters of two important organisations within Justice Department: the Special Judicial Squad and the Public Surveillance Unit.
The original structure was the site of the assassination of Chief Judge Cal, who fell to his death from the public viewing gallery in the statue's eyes.[4]
