Statio Cognitium

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Statio Cognitum (Known Base) is the IAU moniker for the lunar landing site of Apollo 12 (Lunar co-ordinates are 3 Degrees, 0 minutes, 44.6 seconds South. 23 Degrees, 25 minutes, 17.65 seconds West).

Unlike the other Apollo landing sites, this site was not named by the astronauts. The IAU gave the name Mare Cognitum (Known Sea) to this region of the Oceanus Procellarum (Ocean of Storms) in honor of the location on the moon that had the most visits by space probes (Ranger 7, Luna 8, Surveyor 3, and Apollo 12).
