Static Apnea

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Static Apnea is AIDA International discipline in which the freediver holds his breath for as long as possible with his respiratory tracts immersed, his body either in the water or at the surface. Static apnea is the only discipline measuring the duration, and one of the three disciplines considered for the international competitions by team, with Constant Weight and Dynamic with fins. Performances could be done and recognized in both pool or open water (sea, lake, river, etc).

Static Apnea should not be confused with the Guinness World Record for holding the breath underwater. Guinness allows inhalation of oxygen prior to the athlete's performance, while such inhalation is strictly forbidden according to AIDA's rules for the recognition of records para 3.9.

The current record holder is Tom Sietas with 9 minutes 15 seconds set in 2008 at Hamburg, Germany.
