[edit] History
Statesboro High was originally located in downtown Statesboro. The first school house, a wooden structure, was built on West Grady Street in 1901 (its location is now the current site of Statesboro's downtown Police and Fire Departments). An additional brick structure was built adjacent to the original in 1922. The school was relocated in 1964 to 10 Lester Road where it currently resides. The first graduating class at the new location was the Class of 1965. A new school is currently being built at the current location and scheduled to be opened in 2008.
[edit] Athletics
Statesboro High School has a proud athletic tradition winning the AAAA football state championships in 2001 and 2005 and the AAAA boy's basketball championship in 1991. The current Blue Devils football head coach is Steve Pennington. With 25 years of coaching experience, Pennington has led the Blue Devils to the playoffs in the three years as head coach, including the 2004 and 2005 AAAA title games (winning in 2005). SHS is also proud of its other sports including: the Swim Team (SHS Aqua Devils), girl's basketball, girl's and boy's soccer, softball, baseball, tennis, cross country, track, tennis, and cheerleading (for basketball and football). Athletes of note who have graduated from SHS include DeAngelo Tyson (2008 UGA), John Knox (2007 UGA), Justin Houston (2007 UGA), Jennifer Tucker (2007 UGA) and David Cone (2006 U of Michigan). Statesboro High School is also very proud of its marching band under the direction of Joe Ferguson.
Honoring the Statesboro tradition of excellence, other teams have reached the prestigious state level in the past year. These teams include the swim and cross country teams.
[edit] The Arts
Statesboro High has had a very colorful selection of students with outstanding abilities in the different Art departments. The drama department hosts it's very own Vaudeville performance every Spring for it's school, as well as anyone from Statesboro and the surrounding towns. The Choral group has done many outstanding performances, concerts, and has received outstanding remarks from judges of competitions they attend. The Band/Music Department has many very gifted musicians that stand out from the rest and bring great honor to themselves and the school they represent. Mr. Joe Ferguson, the current band director, conducts three band classes, and encourages his students to push themselves past what they have been previously capable of. The premiere group is the Statesboro High School Wind Ensemble, which has performed in and out of Statesboro for many concerts, and band festivals, receiving two consecutive years of straight superior performances. Many of these outstanding students have been recognized statewide at the GMEA All-State band, such as Matt Brown, an 07 graduate who plays French Horn, and Melanie Schmid, who as of the 08 All-State band, achieved the placement as Principle Horn.
Statesboro High School's marching band is currently working on preparing for next year's show. The theme will be 'Micheal Jackson' including the songs "Thriller", "Beat It", "Billie Jean", and others. The band website is www.statesboroband.com. Visit this website for more info.
