State of the Heart is Maureen McGovern's sixth studio album; it was released in 1988, just one year after her voice/piano album Another Woman in Love. It was recorded at Clinton Recording Studios in New York City in 1987.
Unlike her previous album, it is a wholly orchestrated album and consists of contemporary love songs (six of which were composed by her long-time collaborators Jeffrey D. Harris and Judy Barron). The last track is the original version of Michel LeGrand and Alan and Marilyn Bergman's song "On My Way to You," which (according to McGovern's official site) was written especially for McGovern. With the exceptions of "Here You Come Again" (which is a slow, jazzy version, compared to Dolly Parton's medium-tempoed country/pop version) and "Blue Interlude," all of the songs from this album are original.
"Blue Interlude" contains no lyrics but only vocalization. It is based on Frederic Chopin's composition "Prelude No. 20 in C Minor."
Kirk Whalum played the saxophone for the first and fifth tracks.
The picture for the front of the album shows McGovern (with her hair dyed a darker brown and grown down to her waist) wearing a gray robe in a gray background. It was photographed by Joyce Tenneson.
