The State University of New York at Oneonta (also know as O-State, Oneonta State, and SUCO) is a four-year liberal arts college in Oneonta, New York, United States, with approximately 5,800 students. The College offers many bachelor's degrees and a number of graduate degrees. SUNY Oneonta is particularly renowned for its education program (given its traditional context at the college) and more recently its music industry degree. Kiplinger's magazine has named the SUNY College at Oneonta to its 2007 "Kiplinger 100 Best Values in Public Colleges," which was released in the February 2007 issue of the magazine. This marks the first appearance by SUNY-Oneonta in Kiplinger's nationwide rankings of the top 100 public colleges and universities that "combine outstanding value with a first-class education." In August, U.S. News and World Report ranked the College in the top tier in its rankings of "America's Best Colleges 2007." Oneonta has been cited as the safest campus setting in New York State for colleges of 5,000 or more students and the ninth-safest in the country.

Established in 1889 as a state normal school with the sole mission of training teachers, the College at Oneonta was a founding member of the State University of New York system in 1948. The State University of New York at Oneonta was also used in the 1973 cult horror film The Last House on Dead End Street (aka The Funhouse). The film was made by then SUNY Oneonta student Roger Michael Watkins and featured entirely local talent, including SUNY professor Paul M. Jensen.

A highly selective liberal arts college with a pre-professional focus, SUNY-Oneonta features outstanding and accessible faculty, students committed to academics and community service, exceptional technology, a modern fieldhouse and outstanding athletic facilities, and a beautiful rural campus. Since 1999, Oneonta has renovated all dining and residence halls and implemented over $70 million in facilities improvements. Nationally accredited academic programs (including Education) and over 800 annual scholarship awards have attracted talented classes. Unique facilities include a Music Recording Studio with tunable walls; cutting-edge Computer Art Lab; DNA Computing and Genomics Lab; and new residence hall with apartment-style living.

SUNY Oneonta has various types of living arrangements, ranging from doubles to apartments. The double residence halls are mainly for freshmen but anyone can stay if them if you request it. The names of the halls are Golding, Hulbert, Littell, Tobey and Wilber. Hulbert features a dining hall in the basement of the residence hall.

The quads are Ford, Grant, Hays, Huntington and Sherman.

The six-person rooms, which are also known as suites are Blodgett, Macduff, Matteson, and Curtis.

Recently, the college added an on-campus apartment-style dorm known as Higgins Hall, generally reserved for upperclassmen.

Designed Singles are offered in limited number in Ford, Grant, Hays, Higgins (within apartments), Huntington, and Sherman. IRPs (Individual Room Progams) are granted on a space available basis.

The purpose of the partnership was to focus relief efforts by the SUNY College at Oneonta community, notably in the area of education, in support of those on the Gulf Coast whose lives have been adversely affected by the hurricanes of 2005. OGC2 spent most of their relief efforts in Pass Christian, MS, and they also helped out in New Orleans, LA.

[edit] Fundraising

OGC2’s main fundraiser was called “Strive for Five”. Students, faculty, staff, and, members of the campus community, were encouraged to purchase a share for $5. Donations went towards the purchase of a mobile classroom for the Southern Gulf Coast region. Groups in the Oneonta area were also supporting this effort. When the campaign ended, the group raised $13,000 dollars in just five days.


[edit] Big O' Poetry Slam

The Big O' Poetry Slam is a widely attended event on the campus at Oneonta State. Founded by Alicia Francis, Jamie Manning, Robert Haggerty, George Castle and Robb Thibault on October 24, 2001. Hunt College Union is the certified poetry slam venue on campus with Poetry Slam Inc. and member of the Association of College Unions International. Some highlights include hosting the first two Poetry Cross Training Camps. The Big O’ Poetry Slam has featured more than a dozen national poetry slam champions. The club has sent teams to the College Union Poetry Slam Nationals seven years in a row and have made three finals stage appearances including taking the silver medal at the 2005 College Nationals and placing 4th at the 2008 Nationals in New Mexico.

SUNY Oneonta sports teams are nicknamed the "Red Dragons." SUNY Oneonta teams participate and compete within NCAA's Division III and in the State University of New York Athletic Conference. Except for Men's Soccer, which is currently transitioning from Division I to Division III and will be eligible for NCAA D-3 and SUNYAC competition in 2008. All of Oneonta's athletic teams also compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

Oneonta's teams practice and compete in numerous athletic facilities. The most notable of which include:

•The Alumni Field House, which is home to the women's volleyball team and the men's and women's basketball teams and has a seating capacity of 4,000 in the Dewar Arena which also includes an indoor running track above the main floor.

•The Red Dragon Soccer Field, for men & women's soccer.

•The All College Field, home to women & men's lacrosse, field hockey, men & women's track & field activities

Oneonta has long been known for its strong soccer programs, both men's & women's. In 2003, the women's soccer team captured the NCAA Division III National Champioship over the University of Chicago. It was the first National Title in SUNY Oneonta's history of athletic competition. The program had a 101 game unbeaten streak within conference play in the SUNYAC, which ended on October 6, 2007 to SUNY Plattsburgh. The streak was the longest conference winning streak in NCAA history (all divisions). The 2007 team rebounded after the loss and won it's next 7 SUNYAC games, the seventh being the Conference Championship on November 3rd to advance to the NCAA Tournament. Their NCAA birth set up a matchup with Endicott College on October 10, which Oneonta lost 3-1.

SUNY Oneonta's Track team in 2006 finished 3rd at the NCAA Division III championships, where Musu Jackson-Buckner was the individual National Champion for the 200 meter run. Oneonta's Track team is only in its 7th year of NCAA competition and already has 13 All-Americans, many of them repeat All-Americans (4 men, 9 women). The women's outdoor track team has won 3 straight ECAC Championships.

The Oneonta Men's Rugby team in 1999 finished 4th in Northeast in Division 2. The Rugby team started in 1986. There have been many members who have gone on to play at the international level.

[edit] Tracey Ranieri

Ranieri enters her first full academic year as the Director of Athletics after being named to the position on January 1, 2007. Ranieri brings extraordinary talent as an administrator and coach having served the college for 17 years in both capacities. Ranieri began her career at Oneonta as the Assistant Athletic Director, Senior Woman Administrator and Women’s Soccer Coach in 1991.

During her tenure as the Assistant and SWA she brought the NCAA CHAMPS Lifeskills Program to Oneonta and served as the coordinator for 12 years, promoting academic and athletic excellence, community service, personal development and career development for student athletes through year-round workshop.

As the Athletic Department’s Compliance Coordinator she ensured integrity concerning student athlete eligibility issues and created an organizational and historical database that tracks academic and athletic eligibility for NCAA compliance. Other SUNY schools now use this compliance program. She has also served as the academic liaison to campus faculty and has worked collaboratively to support the academic needs of student athletes through programming and most recently created a Faculty Mentorship Program that augments the faculty student athlete relationship.

As a graduate of the prestigious NCAA Fellow Program in 2006, she traveled the country to expand her hands on knowledge of facilities development as well. Her hands in many things, she is known as a tireless self-starter who works cooperatively with all facets of the campus community to support student athletes and promote growth in the athletics program.

As soccer coach, Ranieri built a program that currently maintains the longest conference unbeaten streak (95) in NCAA soccer history, all divisions both men and women. Her tenure as coach of Oneonta included 14 post-season appearances including 8 straight NCAA appearances from 1999-2006, eight SUNYAC Conference Championships and five Coach of the Year Awards. In addition, Ranieri was selected as the NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2003 when Oneonta won the Division III National Championship, the first team national championship in the history of the college. Ranieri and her husband, David, who served as her associate coach for 15 years, also celebrated numerous academic and athletic all-Americans.

In 2004 Ranieri received the esteemed SUNY Chancellor’s Award for excellence in professional service. This award is presented to SUNY employees that have consistently demonstrated superlative performance within and beyond their position.

Ranieri received a BS in 1986 from of Ithaca College, an MS in 1993 from East Stroudsburg and a BS in 1995 from SUNY Binghamton.

In 1999 she was inducted into the NYS Section VI Athletic Hall of Fame and in 2001 she was inducted into the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame.

[edit] Tom Benoit

Benoit enters his 14th year as a member of the Oneonta Athletics Department and his first year as the Associate Director of Athletics. In this new role Benoit will be primarily responsible for all NCAA compliance issues within the Athletics Department. Benoit will also oversee the Department’s sports event staffing and facility scheduling, as well as directly supervise the Athletic Training staff.

Benoit began his career as the Head Athletic Trainer at Oneonta in 1994. In 2000 he assumed the title of strength & conditioning coordinator to coincide with his athletic training duties. In 2004 he received a promotion to Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine.

Benoit is a 1993 graduate of Marietta College in Ohio where he received his Bachelor's Degree majoring in sports medicine and English. In 1994 he received a Master of Education degree with a concentration in athletic training from the University of Virginia. Benoit is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainer's Association and has been a presenter at various athletic training conferences and coaching clinics while being published in the Journal of Athletic Training. He is also a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist within this organization.

During his tenure at Oneonta he has also served as a lecturer within the physical education department and was the men's and women's cross country coach from 1997-1999. He continues to be instrumental in the ongoing development of the Alumni Field House and Chase PE Building fitness areas along with actively carrying out administrative duties in the Athletics Department. Benoit has served on many department and campus committees to better student life at Oneonta. Benoit lives in Oneonta with his wife, Meghan.
