[edit] Making of the album
The album was produced by Eric Valentine. He has also produced albums by Queens of the Stone Age, Good Charlotte and the neon knights.
MTV reports that the band chose the album name for two reasons. Firstly, the band wanted to motivate people they had met who stated that they would "love to do this and that" but never had the drive to do it. The second being that the band viewed Start Something as their first "musical step", as they felt thefakesoundofprogress, originally intended as only a demo, "did not accurately reflect their ability".[1]
[edit] Chart performance and singles
At the end of February 2004, Start Something has reached a peak of 33 on the Billboard 200 album chart in the U.S., and #4 in the UK. It has made the heavy metal charts in Australia as well as the album charts. Five singles were taken from this album: "Last Train Home", "Burn, Burn", "Wake Up (Make a Move)", "Last Summer" and "Goodbye Tonight". The first four made the top 20 in the UK, with the "Last Train Home" making the top 10. "Burn Burn" also made the Australian top 50 singles charts. "I Don't Know" was also released for radio airplay in the United States and "We Are Godzilla, You Are Japan" was released in the UK. At the beginning of June, the album was certified gold by the RIAA for sales exceeded at 500,000 copies.
[edit] Reception
Initial reception of the album was positive. Johnny Loftus of All Music Guide gave the album two out of five stars and said.
As sonically powerful as Start Something is, and as convincing as Lostprophets' earnest vocalizing and layered instrumental dynamics are, it's just so damn difficult to take the Welshmen seriously when every megabyte of their sonic output is a patent appropriation of the metal movement's most salable proofs.[2]
Sputnikmusic gave the album 3.5 of 5 stars and said that the albums lyrics is much better but songs like I Don't Know and Goodbye Tonight ruins the album. He also said
Fans of their first full length LP 'The Fake Sound of Progress' will tell you that it lacks the innovation and energy of the first album. Fans of this piece will tell you the melodies, vocals and the songwriting in general has improved. And both are right, in a way at least[3].
Drowned In Sound gave the album 8 out of 10 and ended out praising the album. He also said
The irony of Lostprophets' emergence was that the cooler they tried to be, the less credible they were. Indeed, the band themselves are reputedly very quick to disown their first record (reports suggest they consider this their first proper record, which may explain the title). Yet the enormous fanbase they gathered in that time seems to have spurred them onto better things. With Start Something they've gained the confidence to inject some personality into their sound and claim it rightfully as their own[4].
Other critics gave Start Something mixed reviews. The album is now their best-selling album, having been certified Gold in the US[5] and Platinum in the UK[6].
The album was released in the UK on February 2, 2004 and was commercially successful, achieving number four in the UK Albums Chart. The critical response from mainstream magazines was mostly positive, though the response from rock publications such as Kerrang!, Metal Hammer and Rock Sound was sometimes tepid.
