Starrcade (2000) was the tenth annual (eighteenth overall) Starrcade professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by World Championship Wrestling (WCW). It was held on December 17, 2000 at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C., which had been the location of the event since 1997.[1][2] This was the final Starrcade event as WCW was purchased by rival promotion World Wrestling Federation in March 2001.

The main event saw WCW World Heavyweight Champion Scott Steiner defend his title against Sid Vicious. Steiner won with his Steiner Recliner, making Sid pass out while in the hold.[3] The main match on the undercard was Goldberg versus Lex Luger in a No Holds Barred match in which Goldberg would have been forced to retire if he lost the match.[3][4]

[edit] Event

The first match of the night was a Triple Threat Ladder match featuring the Jung Dragons (Kaz Hayashi and Yang with manager Leia Meow) versus 3 Count (Shane Helms and Shannon Moore) versus Jamie Knoble and Evan Karagias with the stipulation that the wrestler retrieving the envelope would receive a future match for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship. Cruiserweight champion Chavo Guerrero sat at ringside to commentate. The match would end with both Helms and Moore on top of a ladder, with the teammates agreeing shaking hands and grabbing the envelope at the same time to ensure that they would both get a title shot.[3][4]

The next match featured Team Canada leader Lance Storm (along with Major Gunns and Jim Duggan taking on The Cat (along with his assistant Ms. Jones). Before the match, Storm joked about how it took the United States 37 days to do what Canada did in 1 (referring to the controversy surrounding the 2000 U.S. Presidential election). After the referee was kayfabe rendered unconscious by a kick from Jones, Duggan entered the ring and considered hitting the Cat with his signature 2x4, he was reluctant to do so however and decided to just clothesline him instead. Storm would then pick get Cat to submit with the Canadian Maple Leaf. After the match, Team Canada turned on Duggan and kicked him out of the group.[3]

The third match featured Terry Funk challenging Crowbar (along with valet Daffney) for the WCW Hardcore Championship. As was typical with hardcore matches at the time, the match took place all over the arena and even had moments taking place outside. Daffney would interfere throughout the match to help Crowbar. The match would end with Funk bringing a car door into the ring and piledriving Crowbar onto it to win the championship.[3]

The next match of the night featured KroniK (Brian Adams and Bryan Clark) taking on Big Vito and Reno (along with Vito's kayfabe sister Maria). The match did not last long as Reno would turn on Vito would turn on Vito and perform his Roll of the Dice finisher on him. Reno then revealed he was the one who had hired KroniK and joined the Natural Born Thrillers.[3]

The fifth match of the event was an Ambulance match between Mike Awesome and Bam Bam Bigelow. The match ended after Awesome hit Bigelow with one of the lights from the ambulance, which caused Bigelow to fall backwards and through the roof of the ambulance.[3]

Shane Douglas challenging Misfits in Action leader General Rection for the WCW United States Championship was next. Chavo Guerrero, Jr. (who had recently dropped his MIA name of Lt. Loco after leaving the group) came out and threw Douglas a steel chain. Before Douglas could use it though, Guerrero pointed the chain out to the referee who proceeded to disqualify Douglas, revealing that Guerrero had swerved everyone in order to help Rection retain the US Title. After the match, Douglas performed a Franchiser to both Guerrero and Rection. He continued to assault Rection until MIA members Corporal Cajun and Sgt. AWOL came out to help their leader.[3]

The next match was a Bunkhouse Street Fight pitting Jeff Jarrett and the Harris Brothers (Ron and Don) against the Filthy Animals (Konnan, Rey Mysterio, Jr. and Billy Kidman). The Filthy Animals were accompanied by Tygress, although early in the match she joined the announcing team. The arena had various weapons set up for the wrestlers to use as weapons, including a popcorn machine at ringside and mock bar in the ring. Jarret would pick up the win for his team by pinning Kidman after a Stroke.[3]

The WCW World Tag Team Championship was on the line in the next match, featuring The Insiders (Diamond Dallas Page and Kevin Nash) challenging the Perfect Event (Shawn Stasiak and Chuck Palumbo. WCW Commissioner Mike Sanders came out with the Perfect Event, but WCW C.E.O. Ric Flair came out and said that would strip Stasiak and Palumbo of the titles if Sanders got in the ring.[4] During the match, the crowd was chanting "We want Hall!".[3]. The Insiders would win the match and the belts after Nash pinned Palumbo after using his Jacknife Powerbomb finisher.[4]

The next match featured Lex Luger taking on Goldberg, with the stipulation being that Goldberg would be forced to retire if he lost the match. During the match, Goldberg's friend and trainer The Sarge would come out to help Goldberg and Buff Bagwell followed to stop Sarge. While the referee was busy separating Sarge and Luger, Bagwell interfered and did his Buff Blockbuster finisher on Goldberg. Goldberg would make a comeback though and win the match after his spear/Jackhammer combo. After the match, Goldberg and Sarge would carry a Make-a-Wish Foundation kid to the back on their shoulders.[3]

The main event of the night featured Scott Steiner (accompanied by one of his mistresses Midajah) defending the WCW World Heavyweight Championship against Sid Vicious, who was wrestling in his first match since being stripped of the title the previous April.[4] After Steiner knocked out the referee during the match, Midajah threw a steel pipe to Steiner. Steiner hit Sid with the pipe and Charles Robinson came out to take over as referee of the match, but Steiner was only able to get a two-count. Jeff Jarrett would come out to help Steiner, he tried to hit Sid with a guitar but missed and hit Steiner, Jarrett then knocked out the referee before he could disqualify Steiner. After a third referee came out, Steiner put an unconscious Sid in the Steiner Recliner, and the referee awarded the match to Steiner.

[edit] Aftermath

By winning a Four Corners match, Vicious earned a second shot at Steiner. Steiner was disqualified during that match, thus setting up a rematch for the next pay-per-view, WCW Sin. Their feud also involved Jeff Jarrett and Animal, which would eventually lead to the creation of the Magnificent Seven stable.

Starrcade 2000 was the final Starrcade produced. WCW was sold to the World Wrestling Federation thirteen weeks later.
