Starclimber follows the story of the first expedition into outer space, Which Matt Cruse and Kate de Vries(if you are confused in any weird way she never massied Hal Slater). will be a part of. once the ship takes off Matt and Kate face many dangers. Kate is estatic to discover space creatures. one day onboard the ship suffers major damage and Matt is badly injured. The ship drifts dangerously off-course, and as Matt's condition worsens, Kate begins to realize she still has feelings for him. The ship is attacked by creatures when everyone is asleep, killing most of the crew. Kate is cornered by one, about to be killed when Matt shows up (still injured) with a gun and kills the creature. Matt and Kate have to put the ship back on course and get back to Earth or be killed by the space creatures. Matt manages to get the ship back on course, but is impaled by one of the creatures. Kate seized the gun and shot it, which caused it to flee. Kate locks down the room and tries to save Matt. Matt lasts a long time, but when Earth is coming in-sight and the creatures are leaving he realizes he is dying. Kate kisses him passionately and tries to convince him otherwise.

the ship crash lands a couple hours later, and it is revealed that Kate is the only survivor, Matt died of Blood-loss before the crash landing. The novel ends with Kate swearing to dedicate all her finds to him, to honour him, and everything he has done.

The novel then heads to many years later, where Kate is a revered scientist. She makes an important discovery (implied but not told fully about), everyone congratulates her, and she sheds a tear, wishing Matt was here to see this.
