StarShipSofa is a Science Fiction podcast from the UK hosted by Tony C. Smith. Smith has, in a press release, called it "one of the top science fiction podcast sites"[1] and claims it to be "the biggest SF book/author podcast coming out of the UK and one of the top in the US." [2]. StarShipSofa was anonymously nominated for Best Fan Podcast in the 2007 Parsec Awards [3], but was not a finalist.
The show was first put out in July 2006 and new episodes are issued weekly. In February 2007 a forum was made available to the listeners.
StarShipSofa usually tackles specific authors, but also covers other subjects such as films or specific Sci-Fi related themes. In October 2007 the StarShipSofa started to put out Hugo Award Winning audio stories for free, this in line with a development that saw the podcast in 2008 evolve into StarShipSofa - The Audio Science Fiction Magazine. According to Tony Smith the StarShipSofa will each week deliver a full package of SF related audio material all free including audio fiction, fact audio essays, flash fiction and poetry, all by leading names in the SF field.[4] Writers who have already donated their work include Ian Watson, Pat Cadigan, Harry Harrison, Joe Haldeman, Joan D Vinge, Norman Spinrad, Ian MacDonald, J D Nordley, Gweneth Jones, Alastair Reynolds, Jerry Pournelle, Landon Jones, John Varley, Pat Murphy, John Kessel, Laurel Winter, Jeff Vandermeer, Kevin J Anderson, Bradley Denton and Matthew Hughes.[5]
In March 2008, for the first time ever, all five of the short stories that had been shortlisted for the BSFA Award for Best Short Story 2007 were made available on the StarShipSofa in audio narrated format for free.[6].
StarShipSofa is free and is available for subscription and automatic download through iTunes.
