Stanton is a city in Stanton County, Nebraska, United States. It is part of the Norfolk, Nebraska Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,627 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Stanton County[3]. Both the city and county are named after Edwin McMasters Stanton, secretary of war for president Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War[1].

Stanton is located at 41°56′60″N, 97°13′23″W (41.949915, -97.222948)[4].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.6 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,627 people, 612 households, and 438 families residing in the city. The population density was 924.9 people per square mile (356.9/km²). There were 653 housing units at an average density of 371.2/sq mi (143.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.17% White, 0.18% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 1.11% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.40% of the population.

There were 612 households out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.4% were non-families. 24.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $33,462, and the median income for a family was $42,717. Males had a median income of $28,636 versus $20,221 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,637. About 5.8% of families and 9.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.7% of those under age 18 and 10.9% of those age 65 or over.
