"Stannie Get Your Gun" is the 14th episode of the animated series American Dad!. The title is a parody of the musical Annie Get Your Gun.
[edit] Plot
Francine is tired of Stan and Hayley's constant bickering. One of the many things they disagree on is gun control. Stan takes Hayley to NGAland, which used to be Sugar Mountain, but is now owned by the National Gun Association (a parody of the National Rifle Association). There Hayley makes a scene by singing an anti-gun song, getting her and Stan thrown out.
Stan stages a robbery so that Hayley has to use a gun to save the family. Hayley shoots the robber but feels conflicted afterwards, until she learns there was no robbery. It was a ploy to get her to apologize so Stan can go back to Gunland. Angry, she grabs Stan's gun and (with what she mistakenly thinks are blank rounds) shoots him in the neck, rendering him quadriplegic.
Now she feels guilty about this and agrees to help Stan sing pro-gun songs at NGA Land. For the encore, rather than singing another pro-gun song, they decide to sing Haley's anti-gun song instead. Because of the song, everyone decides that guns are bad. The old NGAland mascot shows up with the intention of killing Hayley to get his job back. Stan takes the bullet meant for his daughter, and, miraculously, the second bullet dislodges the first bullet, and Stan recovers completely and believes that "guns heal the sick".
Meanwhile, Roger gets mad at Steve for stealing his cookie that he made. Driven mad by Steve's declaration of "snooze, you lose," he sets out to gain revenge on Steve by convincing him that he was adopted.
He starts out small by pointing out the minor differences between him and his parents. As the show progresses, Roger's tactics become more demented, even going so far as to destroy all the photos & videos of Steve as a baby. Steve is eventually convinced, and vents out his frustrations on his paraplegic father (pushes a book case on top of him).
As Hayley is talking to Stan, Steve bursts in, and in a fit of rage, knocks over a bookcase onto Stan. Hayley is shocked and asks Steve what he thinks he's doing. Steve coolly replies, "Something we've both been wanting for a long time!" and proceeds to French kiss his own sister.
Roger searches the FBI database looking for a child that fits Steve's profile, and sends him to a couple whose son was kidnapped when he was an infant. Roger insists that they are his real parents (as well as that they are a sailing family), and coaxes him into wearing a little sailor outfit. Steve greets the family enthusiastically, and they are overjoyed at the return of their "son." When Roger exposes his ploy, Steve (rather than showing any anger) congratulates him on organizing such a clever ruse (though the couple was not involved in any way).
As the episode ends in Stan's hospital room, Hayley sits in Roger's seat and declares "Early bird gets the worm," implying that Roger might one day seek revenge on her as well.
[edit] Trivia
- The National Gun Association also appeared in the Family Guy episode "And the Wiener is..."
- When Roger is burning Steve's baby pictures, you can see Steve used to have a football-shaped head like Stewie Griffin from Family Guy.
- The title of the episode plays on an old cowboy song Annie Get Your Gun, sung about Buffalo Bill's celebrated sidekick Annie Oakley, herself an excellent shot.
- The way in which Stan becomes able to walk again is very similar to The Simpsons episode "Homer and Apu".
- The Smiths have a giant wooden fork and spoon on their wall, typically a Filipino or 1970's in-joke, and similar to Marie and Frank Barone of Everybody Loves Raymond.
- The theme park owned by the national gun association includes a restaurant owned by musician Ted Nugent who is an avid gun collector in real life.
[edit] Notes
- In New Zealand and Australia, this episode is the first episode of Season 2.
- When Hayley starts crying while she and Stan are singing, there is a microphone in front of Stan, but in the next shot of Stan the microphone is gone. Then in the next shot of Stan the microphone is back.
- In this episode we see Steve French kiss Hayley remarking that this was something they had wanted to do for a long-time interestingly though, in the Pilot episode at the kitchen table Steve had stated his disgust at the very thought of making out with his sister, although Steve was under the false impression that Hayley was not his sister.
- A running gag throughout American Dad is Stan asking someone at the CIA to make a flying pig for him, which is incomplete when he calls him. In this Episode, the invention in question is literally a flying pig, but it only has one wing.
